The Royal Rumble: Welcome
I would like to start off my first post of the year with one simple word. Welcome. Welcome to the first edition of my Royal Rumble series. Welcome to the 2021-22 Victoria Royals season, and after 580 long days, welcome back to the Save On Foods Memorial Centre. On October 2nd, 2021 Victoria will play host to their rival, the Vancouver Giants, for their regular-season home opener. The roar of the Royals faithful will be a welcome sound compared to the silence that has haunted the halls.
Royals mauled by the Cougars
In the second game of the Royals’ season, it was the Price George Cougars who came away with the two points. This one felt like a loss that was snatched from the jaws of victory. Victoria was hoping to prove the doubters wrong after a performance Friday that was less than stellar. The game against the Rockets was a great example of a young team that simply got overwhelmed. After a couple of days of practice and rest, it was time to get back to work and right the ship.
Previewing the 2020/21 Victoria Royals Roster
On March 16th the Victoria Royals released their 2021 roster. For an abbreviated “bubble season”, Head Coach and General Manager Dan Price has made a bold choice. With a forward group that averages just 5-foot-10 and a defense corp that averages 5-foot-11, he has chosen a relatively small group. In a league that has generally been more suited to a big bruising style, maybe this is a trend towards what we have seen in the NHL. Speed and skill have started to pull away from that “old school” logic.
Anion Exchange of Ruddlesden-Popper Lead Halide Perovskites Produces Stable Lateral Heterostructures
Heterostructures of three-dimensional (3D) halide perovskites are unstable because of facile anion interdiffusion at halide interfaces. Two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden–Popper halide perovskites (RPPs) show suppressed and anisotropic ion diffusion that could enable stable RPP heterostructures, yet the direct and general growth of lateral RPP heterostructures remains challenging.

Royal Rumblings: Volume 1
Searching high and low for a way to cover a variety of Victoria Royals topics in one article. Behold the Royal Rumblings. This will be a series to cover small stories from throughout the season as well as the off-season. It has been a quiet few weeks for the Royals, since the announcement of the resumption of the WHL season. That changed recently and now there are a variety of topics to discuss around the team so let’s dive in.
Top 10 Data Analytics Trends That Will Boom Your Business
“Without big data analytics, companies are blind and deaf, wandering out onto the web like deer on a freeway.” -Geoffrey Moore, Author of Crossing the Chasm Inside the Tornado Without analytics, your company is vulnerable because analytics gives you valuable insight into what is and is not working. If your company doesn’t understand what mistakes it has made with its business decision-making, marketing performance, or customer interactions, it will keep on making those same errors.
Royals/Bruins franchise all-star team - DUBNetwork
With no current Royals information to speak of, I decided to look back at the organization as a whole, and create a Royals/Bruins franchise all-star team. In 2006, the Chilliwack Bruins were formed as an expansion franchise. Their first five years in Chilliwack resulted in less than stellar results. The Bruins never made it past the first round of the playoffs and with attendance dropping they were moved to Victoria in 2011.
Interview with Royals Captain Phillip Schultz
I had the pleasure of having a Zoom chat interview with the current Royals Captain, Phillip Schultz. Just over two years ago, the Royals named Schultz their seventh captain in team history. A product of Rodovre, Denmark, he was chosen 38th overall by the Royals in the 2018 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. He was on pace for career-high point totals before the shutdown. With no sign of the WHL season starting, on September 11th he temporarily transferred over to his hometown Rodovre Mighty Bulls.
Royals host the WHL Development Combine
This past weekend the Okanagan Hockey Group put on a WHL Development Combine in Victoria, BC. In a world where life seems to be an endless supply of new restrictions and procedures these days, for one weekend on Vancouver Island the world of youth hockey seemed relatively normal. Kids of various ages ranging from 11 – 17 participated in a selection of on-ice drills/scrimmages and off-ice training and development.
A Story of Ice and Fire
The Victoria Royals have had decent success with players getting drafted to the NHL. With 10 in 11 years, averaging almost one draft pick per year is respectable. Every team has its concept of what it is looking for in a player. Early round picks are typically “best player available” according to the scouting team (with some exceptions of course). Once you move into the later rounds, however, teams typically make decisions based on positional needs.
Top 3 defensemen in Royals history
The WHL has seen its share of future NHL talent patrolling the blue line over the years, from Shea Weber to Tyson Barrie and believe it or not, everyone’s favorite GM around these parts, Jim Benning. Solid offensive defensemen can put a marginal team over the top into contending status. What Quinn Hughes has done for the Vancouver Canucks is a perfect example of that.
The Royal Family
The Royal Family – Where are they now? While one might think this is about Prince Harry or William, or whomever else the tabloids love to write about, this is a hockey site after all… This is about a family, a team, a bond that is hard to break no matter how far you may move away. This is about a different kind of royalty, the Victoria Royals, where hockey is king.

AHL approves sale and relocation of Portland Pirates to Springfield Hockey, LLC
The American Hockey League’s Board of Governors announced on Monday that they unanimously approved the transfer of ownership of the Portland Pirates to Springfield Hockey, LLC. The Board of Governors also approved the relocation of the franchise to Springfield, Mass., beginning with the 2016-17 season. “This is a great day for our organization, for the City of Springfield and for the entire region,” said Frank Fitzgerald, attorney for the ownership group.
ECHL coming to Portland?
Could the Portland Pirates rise from the ashes and make a return to the Cross Insurance Arena? That’s the plan according to various media sources as former Pirates’ Chief Operating Officer Brad Church, who has formed a partnership with the team’s original general manager Godfrey Wood to bring an ECHL franchise to Portland for the 2017-18 season.
Pirates leaving town with little warning
Without any warning the Portland Pirates are packing up and moving out of town after 23 seasons, leaving many city and county officials, local business owners and fans stunned as news broke late Wednesday afternoon. The American Hockey League franchise is being sold to an outside group of investors with the intent of relocating the franchise to Springfield, Massachusetts for the 2016-2017 season.

Rob Flick scored the game-winning goal in the third overtime to lift the Portland Pirates over the Hershey Bears, 2-1, in Game 3 of the Atlantic Division semifinal Thursday evening before 8,084 at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Flick was a late decision to play by Pirates’ head coach Scott Allen.
Pirates receive lineup boost
The Portland Pirates are getting a boost to their lineup prior to Game 3 of the Atlantic Division semifinals. The Florida Panthers announced Wednesday they have assigned forwards Logan Shaw and Greg McKegg and defenseman Mike Matheson to the Pirates for the remainder of the Calder Cup playoffs.
Pirates grab a 1-0 series lead over Hershey
– Rob Schremp and Shane Harper each scored twice Friday evening to lift the Portland Pirates over the Hershey Bears with a 6-4 victory before 3,959 at the Cross Insurance Arena in the opening game of the Atlantic Division semifinal. The Pirates lead the American Hockey League best-of-five series 1-0 with Game 2 set for tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm at the CIA. The series will shift to the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania for Game 3 Thursday and Games 4 and 5 if necessary.
Bears down Pirates to even playoff series, 1-1
– After Friday’s game where the Portland Pirates and Hershey Bears combined for ten goals, Game 2 of the best-of-five series on Saturday was a slightly different. The Bears scored twice in the third period for a 3-1 win over the Pirates before 5,057 at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, knotting the Atlantic Division semifinal at one game apiece. “Tonight was closer to what you’d expect from playoff hockey,” said Pirates’ coach Scott Allen.
Pirates down Falcons in season-finale; will face Hershey in opening round of playoffs
The Portland Pirates wanted to head into the upcoming American Hockey League Calder Cup playoffs with some momentum on their side. They also wanted to avoid facing the league’s top-seeded Toronto Marlies in the opening round. Matt MacKenzie and Sena Acolatse scored third-period goals for the Pirates, giving them a 3-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons in their regular season finale at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. “I thought we needed that,” said Pirates coach Scott Allen.
Falcons sink Pirates in OT
Dakota Mermis scored only 29 seconds into overtime, giving the Springfield Falcons a 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates Saturday night before 3,646 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. It was a missed opportunity for the Pirates (40-27-6-2) to secure their seeding for the upcoming Calder Cup playoffs, however, they still control their own fate.

– Bridgeport Sound Tigers’ forward Bracken Kearns scored with under a minute to play in regulation, snapping a two-all tie for a 3-2 win over the Portland Pirates in their regular-season home finale Friday night in front of 3,317 at the Cross Insurance Arena. The Sound Tigers (40-27-4-3) clinched the final postseason berth in the AHL’s Eastern Conference with the win, eliminating the Hartford Wolf Pack, who earned a 4-1 win over the St. John’s IceCaps earlier in the evening.
Shaw scores twice as Pirates clinch playoff berth
– Logan Shaw scored two goals including the game-winner with under four minutes remaining in the third period for a 3-2 Portland Pirates victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack to clinch a berth in the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup playoffs Sunday afternoon before 3,314 at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.
Pirates flat in loss to PBruins

The Pirates (38-25-5-2) received goals from five different players as the Pirates moved into fourth place in the AHL’s Atlantic Division with 83 points.
Moose win 16U Tier II 2A National Championship
Tanner McClure recorded two goals for the Maine Moose 16U hockey team en route to claiming the Youth Tier II 2A national championship Monday with a 7-4 victory over the Armstrong Arrows (Pennsylvania) at the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne, New Jersey. It’s the fifth national championship for the state of Maine and the first in the Youth category since 2011. The Portland Jr. Pirates Tier II U19 Girls and 18U Boys won their respective national titles last season.
Pirates sign Bukarts to ATO
The Portland Pirates added dynamic forward Rihards Bukarts, signing him to an amateur tryout contract, the team announced Monday. Bukarts, a 5-foot-9, 186-pound left wing from Jurmala, Latvia joins the AHL after spending most of the season in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks. Pirates gain valuable points
It wasn’t a must-win game mathematically for the Portland Pirates, but they certainly didn’t want to ignore its significance. Wade Megan finished with two goals, and Mike McKenna made 43 saves for the Pirates en route to 4-1 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack before 5,810 at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. The Pirates (37-25-5-2) have won six of their last seven games, and taken points in eight of their last nine games for 81 points with seven games remaining in the regular season.
McKenna makes 30 saves as Pirates shutout PBruins
– Mike McKenna must have thought he was on the beach Friday night because he saw nothing but beach balls being thrown his way by the Providence Bruins. McKenna stopped all 30 shots he faced for the Portland Pirates, shutting out the Bruins, 2-0, in front of 4,013 at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. It was McKenna’s third shutout of the season for Portland as he handled the puck with ease for 60 minutes. “We played really well, and that makes it look a lot easier than it is,” said McKenna.
Sound Tigers come from behind to down Pirates
The Portland Pirates gave up five unanswered goals to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers who overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a come-from-behind victory, 5-2, before 8,008 at the annual school day game Tuesday morning at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. McKenna sets franchise wins record as Pirates win fourth straight game
– Mike McKenna made 28 saves to earn his 80th victory in a Portland Pirates uniform Saturday evening becoming winningest goalie in franchise history en route to a 6-1 win over the Springfield Falcons before 3,386 at the Cross Insurance Arena. McKenna surpasses Martin Brochu, who appeared in 171 games for the Pirates over five seasons from 1995-2000.
Pirates win third straight
PORTLAND – Perseverance paid off for the Portland Pirates when it counted most Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. In a game where the Pirates trailed for nearly 58 minutes and had to overcome a one-goal deficit on three occasions, Portland found a way to persevere and get the go-ahead goal, collecting two valuable points in the Atlantic Division standings with their third consecutive victory with a 4-3 win over the Springfield Falcons.

The streak is over. Wayne Simpson scored a pair of goals to lift the Portland Pirates out of their season-long eight-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms before 8,422 at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon.
Pirates gain point, but lose ground in playoff race
Alan Quine stood at center ice, picked up Tanner Fitz’s long ice pass and skated unabated on a breakaway, lifting a backhander over sprawled out Pirates’ goaltender Sam Brittain for the game-winning goal in overtime. That’s how the last five weeks have played out for the Portland Pirates. They’ve played well enough to win, but that provides little solace right now for a team that for all practical purposes is on the outside looking in at the Calder Cup playoffs.
Pirates playoff hopes continue to teeter on edge
The Portland Pirates are in the funks of all funks, and its situation that so fragile at the moment that one mistake leads to the team shattering like a sheet of plate glass. Pirates unable to seal the deal against Falcons
Leading by a goal, only 21.8 seconds stood between the Portland Pirates and their first victory for the month of March. They’re still looking for that victory. Alex Grant scored in the closing seconds of regulation, and Dominic Monardo tallied the game-winning goal in the eighth round of the shootout to lift the Springfield Falcons past the Pirates in come-from-behind fashion, 3-2, before 4,893 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Pirates embarrassed by Marlies on home ice
– With his players skating to the locker room after the final buzzer sounded, Portland Pirates head coach Scott Allen just stood at center ice and stared at the scoreboard in disbelief. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Neither could any of the 2,639, or those that were left, in attendance at the Cross Insurance Arena as the Pirates (31-23-3-1) suffered their fourth straight loss with a thorough 9-2 drubbing at the hands of the Toronto Marlies.
Pirates make small move sending Sauve to Stockton; Stand pat on AHL roster
The American Hockey League trade deadline came and went on Monday without much fanfare for the Portland Pirates. Pirates general manager Eric Joyce only deal was sending defenseman Yann Sauve to the Stockton Heat prior to the 3:00 pm deadline in exchange for future considerations. With the passing of the deadline, the Pirates roster for the remaining 19 regular season games, and any potential playoff games has been finalized.

McKenna recalled by Panthers as trade deadline passes
The Florida Panthers laid most of the groundwork for their Stanley Cup playoff run with the acquisition of three new players on Saturday, leaving Monday’s NHL trade deadline for just some final housekeeping and preparing their AHL affiliate, Portland Pirates, for a run at the Calder Cup playoffs. The Panthers recalled goaltender Mike McKenna from the Pirates on an emergency basis while forward Greg McKegg and defenseman Michael Matheson were returned to the Pirates.
