Guest Column: Economic development is more than a factory
For decades, communities across America measured economic development by a simple standard: How many jobs did we create, and what company is coming next? Those questions still matter, but they no longer tell the whole story. Today's workforce is mobile. Companies are mobile. Families have choices. Businesses don't simply ask about tax rates or available land.
LETTER: Pronouns are all about ‘compelled speech’
Dear Editor, Re: Why are preferred pronouns controversial?, April 23 I read Tanya Ryan's column, and I have to say, it's not just off the mark, it's a perfect example of how this entire debate has been dumbed down into some kindergarten-level talk about manners. Gabbard gained a name for herself in progressive circles in 2016 when, bucking the majority of the Democratic Party, she endorsed Bernie Sanders’s candidacy, and resigned her seat at the DNC to do so. She generally opposes the most egregious displays of U.S. militarism and is a reliable vote on left domestic priorities.
Guide to Awful Anti-Minimum Wage Arguments
The minimum wage is a key issue in many states’ elections in 2018, as it has been the last few Novembers. But awful arguments continue to pollute the discourse. Lest anyone be fooled by them, here are refutations of some of the most popular conservative arguments against minimum wage increases. Milton Friedman has been a popularizer of this idea, actually arguing that a minimum wage provides zero benefit to low-wage workers.
