Covering indie lit events for a local web publication.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yup! Used to own a vintage Royal, for pretentious early-20s writerly reasons. It was a lot of fun to work on.

How is social media changing news?

Simultaneously testing integrity/standards and making it more accessible.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Report as fairly, accurately and authentically as you can, no matter what you focus on.

N/A

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

N/A

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Otter.ai, Zoom, etc.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter - most of my colleagues and pals are active there, and it's a fun way to engage with them, meet new folks & track the industry.

Who do you wish followed you?

Cher, John Waters, Grace Jones and Lloyd Kaufman.

Why did you become a journalist?

I enjoy breaking down comics to see what makes them tick, and I Iike to celebrate the medium.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Personal essays are my favorite thing to do, so any chance I get I'll talk about my relationship to comics.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work first, recognition second!

When's the best time to pitch you?

Not currently open for pitches.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

N/A

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

N/A

What's your favorite drink?

Alcoholic: negroni. Non-alcoholic: anything with citrus.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In front of some other device, unfortunately, out in my garden battling the pests or on a hiking trail soaking up the sun.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

SOLRAD and Comic Book Yeti.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That there's no craft or care in comic reviews, and all comic journalists are "reviewers." Not the case by a long shot.
