Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

"Teen Beat" columnist in the local paper (Darien Progress) at 16, concurrent with a gig as the music writer for my high school newspaper.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

It is diluting and polluting the waters of information beyond reclamation.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Raoul Duke

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It's the same as being a baker. Somebody's gotta make the bread.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't understand hashtags.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Directly.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

It would be quicker to list the tools and software I don't use to do my job.

What's your favorite social network?

I dislike them all equally, but X with prejudice.

Who do you wish followed you?

Haruki Murakami

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always enjoyed writing about things that most people don't see unless you point it out to them.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I was the music "critic" for a while.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A four-book travel memoir series, Lunar New Years, and Book 2 (Years of the Ox & Tiger) is probably some of the best writing I've ever done.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write about what you want, write with your inner voice, and don't listen to criticism unless it's constructive.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Now.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

On-site tasting with a famous chef at a five-star Taiwanese restaurant.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Some guest post nonsense about crypto.

What's your favorite drink?

Vodka and tonic with lime

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

The pool, walking around town, or having a drink at the pub.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Vice Magazine, Pitchfork, and curated Reddit threads

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That all male expats in Asia are deadbeats who couldn't make it in their home countries. It's only partially true.
