“My accounts were frozen because the banks thought I was laundering money”: How a Toronto man raised $1 million for Ukraine by selling stickers
When Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, I was glued to the news. As a Toronto-born kid with Ukrainian and Polish roots, it was personal. I couldn’t stop watching coverage of the unfolding war, particularly the Vice News series Russian Roulette. I dreamed of doing that kind of work, reporting from the frontlines. At the time, I was working at Shopify, but I had been freelancing for Vice, and I felt like I could make journalism my career if I gave it all my effort.

We Hit the Streets of Toronto to See How Much Canadians Know About Cannabis Legalization
Cannabis will be federally legal in Canada on October 17th. But aside from the date, the laws and regulations around where to buy, how much you can buy and where you can consume can be a little confusing for those who live in the Great White North. So how much do Canadians really know about what they can and can't do when it comes to their newly legal herb? We hit the streets of Toronto to find out.

Standoff between Russia and Ukraine over natural gas leaves Europe on edge
With billions of dollars on the line and Russia's presidential election around the corner, two bitter enemies locked horns last week over heat-producing natural gas during a brutal cold spell in Europe. But the tense standoff between Ukraine and Russia also left Europeans on the edge of their seats, asking what's next when it comes to their future supply of the highly lucrative resource. Ukraine and Russia rely on each other to deliver gas to Europe.

Some probably thought the 28-year-old senior analyst, was heading off to a holiday resort to escape the chaotic country for a while. Instead, Yevhen jumped in a truck and drove nearly 800km to join the fight. "I decided that I'd be more useful on the front," he tells me.
The labs that protect against online warfare
Several months after the WannaCry cyber-attack, much of the world still seems to be asleep to the potential catastrophic effects of cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure systems. The first nation state-level cyber-attack on critical infrastructure, widely attributed to a joint collaboration between American and Israeli intelligence against Iran, was uncovered in 2010. Known as the Stuxnet virus, the attack aimed to take down Iran’s nuclear program. The virus failed to achieve its mission.
You Can See the Battle Scars
In east-central Caracas, an improvised memorial for Neomar Lander, a protester killed in June. Christian Borys | Longreads | September 2017 | 20 minutes (4,916 words) Diego Recklessly driving through the sloping streets of Caracas, Diego blares “Bonita,” the bass-heavy reggaeton hit of the summer. Liquidators Live With Legacy Of Chernobyl
The buses are lined up by midmorning, packed with tourists anxious to enter one of the world's most infamous attractions. The excitement is lost on members of the 633rd Fire Brigade of Ivano-Frankivsk, however. For them, the Chernobyl exclusion zone represents the worst 48 days of their lives.

People talk of exodus from cash-starved Venezuelan port
Even in his worst nightmares, Armando Rojas, a longtime business owner in the beach town of Puerto Cabello, never expected to see such scenes of economic struggle in Venezuela. Against the backdrop of both political and economic turmoil that has worsened in recent months, the former playing out mostly in Caracas, Rojas has seen how hard times are affecting people in the once-bustling seaport, about 200 kilometres west of the capital.
Ukraine braces for further cyber-attacks - BBC News

"None of the computers or machines worked except for the General Electric-powered machines like the MRIs [magnetic resonance imaging]," recalled Mykhailo Radutskyi, president of the Boris Clinic - Kiev's largest medical clinic.

The day a mysterious cyber-attack crippled Ukraine
On the morning of Tuesday, 27 June, Oleh Derevianko, the head of Kiev-based cybersecurity firm Information Systems Security Partners (ISSP), was at Bessarabska market, a popular food market in the heart of downtown. Derevianko was picking up a few things before heading out for the 300km drive to his parents’ village. Wednesday was constitution day in Ukraine, a national holiday, and he’d be using the mid-week break to spend a couple days with his kids.
Cyberattack: Was it really ransomware, or an attack on Ukraine - or something yet to come?
A day after the latest cyberattack crippled computers internationally, starting in Ukraine, expert opinions vary widely over who was behind it and what the real goal was. On Tuesday morning in Kyiv, Ukraine, a sudden blast brought traffic to a halt near the city's main railway station. When the dust settled, a mangled Mercedes Benz sat smoking in the street. Dead inside the car was a colonel who worked with the country's special operations forces.

Ukraine's Crowdfunded War Drones Are Ready for Flight
The volunteers fighting to save Ukraine from Russia-backed separatists realized early on they had a major vulnerability: they couldn’t see their enemy from above. That’s when Yury Kasyanov, a former journalist and advertising executive, whose own son had joined the fight as a soldier, sought to build a drone that could turn the tides. He started making homemade flying wing type drones out of styrofoam and Chinese parts. As word of his project spread, he recruited more helpers and funding.
Canadian doctors rebuild bodies shattered by war in Ukraine
During the summer of 2016, in one tragic moment, Evgen Redka lost his friend, his left eye, and the ability to anonymously walk the streets without the concentrated stares of strangers. The young Ukrainian soldier was nearly killed when the vehicle he was in drove over an anti-tank mine in Eastern Ukraine.
Protesters block courthouse after Ukrainian tax boss accused of embezzling millions
The first major legal test of the Ukrainian government's commitment to fight corruption is playing out in a courtroom in Kyiv, where the 38-year-old head of the country's tax and customs service has been accused of embezzling more than $99 million Cdn in public funds. So far, it's not going well. Roman Nasirov was arrested on Friday by a new anti-corruption institution in Ukraine called the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU).
Battered eastern Ukraine seems headed into protracted on-and-off war
On Feb. 19, one day before the latest attempt at a ceasefire in Ukraine, 51-year-old Vitaliy Yermolovich sat in the ruins of his home in Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine and laughed. "So, it'll be the 30th ceasefire?" he said, looking toward his neighbour, Telman Salimov, who fled the conflict in Karabakh nearly 30 years ago for the safety of Ukraine. Salimov ignored the question, remaining focused on the emergency workers below who scurried between massive slabs of cracked concrete and debris.

Shelling stops in Eastern Ukraine town, leaving death and destitution
After a week of extensive and indiscriminate shelling, the government-controlled town of Avdiivka in Eastern Ukraine finally got its first night of relative calm Saturday, and Sunday brought restored electricity. In this part of the world, however, relative calm means that bombardments are a couple kilometres away, instead of a couple of metres. Residents of Avdiivka, a small town just outside the Russian-backed separatist stronghold of Donetsk, could only describe the past week as a living hell.
