Farewell to Abby Wambach, the G.O.A.T. | By Megan Rapinoe and Christie Rampone
Abby Wambach, the U.S. Women’s National Team superstar and leading scorer in international soccer history, recently announced that she will retire at the end of the year. Long-time teammates Christie Rampone and Megan Rapinoe wrote about what they’ll remember most about Abby. * Christie Rampone: Abby was down. I ran over to her. “I just broke my tib and fib,” Abby said, matter-of-factly. She looked up at me with a weird mix of intensity and calm. “Tell Pia I need a sub.” Pia was our coach at the time.

Every time I get interviewed, the first questions are “How are you feeling?” and “How’s your body holding up?” and “It’s your fifth World Cup, how are you staying in shape?” Or some variation of those. It’s like clockwork.

The final whistle blows. Abby Wambach drops to the turf and looks to the sky, albeit just for a moment. Next she sprints over to the corner of the ground to kiss her wife and hug her mother, before draping herself in a flag and rejoining her team-mates. Pride courses through her, together with the sense of a mission accomplished after the huge disappointment of four years ago. Christie Rampone covers her face for an instant, before running towards the space between the two dugouts.
