Chimpanzees drum with regular rhythm when they beat on tree trunks, a form of ancient communication
Chimpanzees drum with regular rhythm when they beat on tree trunks, a new study shows. Chimpanzees and humans last shared a common ancestor around 6 million years ago. Scientists suspect this ancient ancestor must have been a drummer — using beats to communicate. “Our ability to produce rhythm — and to use it in our social worlds — that seems to be something that predates humans being human,” said study co-author Cat Hobaiter, a University of St. Andrews primatologist.

Not-for-profit organizations can unfortunately make for a likely fraud target due to real-life challenges like constraints on time and resources and relying on unvetted volunteers. But there are ways to limit exposure.
Open Forum: We should defend and protect our most vulnerable
CHRISTINA LAWSON I’m saddened to see that our newly elected government has decided that targeting members of the transgender community is one of their top priorities. Republicans are using disinformation and rhetoric to make us afraid of transgender people, and Democrats are blaming them in part for losing the election. Shame on both of you.

Paying close attention to one’s own thoughts, emotions, and being selectively social may seem alien to others who aren’t used to an introvert’s ways. Here are 5 things about introverts that other people, mainly extroverts, just can’t get their head around: 1.
New Study Reveals the Real Reason Why Smart People Are Better off Alone
If you’re intelligent, you’re better off alone. At least, that’s what a recent study in the British Journal of Psychology claims. The question that evolutionary psychologists Kanazawa and Li were looking to answer is what makes a life well-lived and how intelligence, population density and friendship can affect our happiness.

GUEST COLUMN: Florence Area Literacy Council helps adults fulfill their reading dreams
What is your dream? This simple question provokes a long list of all the things we desire. A simple question that usually is answered with what we believe would make us happy in life. If we individually listed our answers, we would discover that we all have different “dreams.” Some complicated, some simple. Several months ago I was sitting at my desk stressing over a fundraiser, stressing over raising money, and in general just having one of those crazy days.
