The great Iron Salts Plot
Undercover reporter Christopher Broadbent (oops) has news of something happening amongst the Knapweed, Creeping Bent, Common Nipplewort, Ladies Bedstraw and Devil’s Bit Scabious. We can exclusively reveal that there is a Plot being hatched in Rye, code named ‘Iron Salts’. The Plot was initially agreed upon at a meeting at a secret location (The Mermaid Inn) last winter, and has only now come to light. We now know who the plotters are and at some considerable risk can share their names.
Walking slowly to the light
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change,” wrote American scholar, TED-talk A-lister, and author of Daring Greatly and Braving the Wilderness among other books. Brown also said, “Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” Brown could have been describing Carolyn Gould’s own journey. This journey began in Surrey before her family moved to St Leonard’s and then to Hastings, where Carolyn grew up.
Investigating Jane Steen
In 1914 Emeline Pankhurst, the militant leader of the suffragettes, wrote, “[Men] have decided that it is entirely right and proper for men to fight for their liberties and their rights, but that it is not right and proper for women to fight for theirs.” Fourteen years later women were finally given universal franchise. There is a thread of Pankhurst running through Rye-based novelist Jane Steen, and through her, it is in the veins of the heroines of her books.
The vicar of X – an occasionally turbulent priest
In the four years since he became Rector of St Mary’s Church in Rye, the Reverend Paul White has built his congregation from not many to around one million people, 13,600 of whom are regular attendees. The “not many” are his actual real life human attendees at church. The rest are those who read his posts (1 million) and his direct followers (13,600) on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Milking nature – the story of Northiam Dairy
Some time in the late 19th century a cow – or possibly several cows – walked from Staplehurst to the Y junction of Whitebread Lane and Station Road, just south of Newenden. They were accompanied by a man called Cysters. At the junction he forked left up a track and settled at what is now Northiam Dairy. There is no record of why he did this, but it’s a good thing for Rye and the villages that he did.
Experts in woodland craft. Beckley twins celebrate 80th birthday
What is a twybill? If you know the answer then you may well have been talking to John and David Paine, who have one. It’s a wooden handled tool with a metal cross-bar, one end of which is like a crochet hook and the other like a very narrow axe-head. Apparently it was used for making sheep fencing, although exactly how remains a mystery known only to The Twins (which they are).
Crafty Kt Bruce | Rye News
You will probably know Kt Bruce as a photographer – well, THE photographer – for Rye actually, darting like Usain Bolt from event to event, seemingly in several places at once. You may also know her as the chief reporter for Rye News. What you are unlikely to know is the remarkable journey that led Kt to these twin skills and the many other talents that she has accumulated along the way.
