Antimony: Feeding the Military – Industrial Complex (or Not)
We have been asked in recent times why Antimony has plunged from $60,000 per tonne of Antimony Trioxide SbO3 to a (recent) low of around $20,000, and the answer is twofold. The first is that the high-end of the price range was brutally squeezing the major user group, i.e. fire retardant users and they went on a buyers’ strike (to the extent that they can get by without Sb).
Niobium – Cutting Through the Misinformation
In mining markets there has been a blizzard of late of companies claiming to have Niobium in their assays. We might say to those who have never seen a full assay on a sample or core, you can have 60 or more elements reported back, though many companies just ask the labs to report on a handful (particularly if gold or silver focussed). That is why given the ubiquity of Rare Earths it is no surprise that virtually any assay anywhere can come up with a reading no matter how small.
Magnesium – The Next Critical Mineral to Ignite?
A favorite experiment of lazy high school chemistry teachers is to trot out the magnesium strip. “Have bunsen burner, will travel!” One can easily and not messily provide a fiery introduction to a subject that might otherwise wallow in a plethora of valences and atomic weights. With a flash, the students are engaged. Then the boredom sets in. The rise and then fall of Magnesium in 2021-22 seemed to be a similar flash in the pan. Was that a one-off or the harbinger of a turnaround?
Tungsten – Going Full Force
It is interesting to note that the current division between the Them (China, Russia, Iran and some BRICs) and the collective US. The US used to be the USA and its camp followers, but now in the midst of a shambolic war in the MidEast, the collective US is divided itself into the USA, Israel and the rest. The first to peel off were the Europeans, tired by the barrage of sticks (and a few carrots) that rained down on them before the first schoolgirl had been bombed.
Leave Your Valuables on the Way Out
Early last decade we worked a lot in Turkey, and, as in many countries, there was the official story, and then there was the real story. The official story much repeated by gold bulls everywhere, was that Turks loved gold. Who doesn’t but the vast bulk of the Turkish population had little gold and not much interest in accumulating it, unlike the Indian middle classes.
Losing Out on Jurisdictional Roulette
Its now a few years since the government in Ottawa brought down a mallet on the dreams/illusions of the listed junior critical minerals space in prohibiting the sale of projects to China. We won’t go into the background for this volte face except to say that we suspected that the Bat Phone with Washington had started ringing and the order was given to stop the Chinese advance in its tracks.
Managing the War Economy
Let’s face it, the West has not had to manage a war economy since 1945. The Korean War provided some stresses, but all the subsequent conflagrations, even ones that seemed serious at the time like Vietnam or Afghanistan or Iraq, were small beer compared to the shockwaves, both military and economic, emanating from the current conflict.
Arafura Resources – Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? - InvestorNews
The very name Nolan´s Bore is so redolent of the Australian Outback that it might have been conjured up by “Banjo” Patterson. One can imagine some tale of woe in the vast red plains with a broken-down windmill, snakes in the house, a young housewife left to her own devices and Aborigines standing guard on one leg with a spear as their only other means of support. The project certainly qualifies as “back of beyond” as it is located 135 kilometers north of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

Any inquiries may be directed to Mr. Ecclestone via his website at https://hallgartenco.com/. An ancient Wall Street WASP asked us “Can they do this?” and our response was “Sure, this stuff was the meat and drink of the markets in the 1980s”. We were talking of hostile takeover bids.
The Coming Ascendancy of Military Metals
Let’s face it folks, if China attacked Taiwan the last thing on people’s minds would be EVs. Thus, in a game of supranational Rock, Paper, Scissors the players with best access to military metals win. As we think we demonstrated in our commentary on China & Criticality, China is more over a barrel on the supply of critical metals for defence (or offence) purposes than the West is.

These are the graphite leaders as we head towards a forecast graphite deficit in 2023
EDITOR: | November 2nd, 2022 | November 02, 2022 | The flake graphite sector does not get as much attention as lithium, yet the demand wave coming is also very significant. For example, in 2021 the International Energy Agency forecast that flake graphite demand could grow between 8x to 25x from 2020 to 2040. Benchmark Mineral Intelligence forecasts we need 97 new (56,000tpa) natural flake graphite mines from 2022 to 2035.
Defining Criticality
Criticality as Semantics Metals rankings have now become like radio stations’ Top 40 lists of days gone by. However, it may just be a matter of international semantics as to what the word “critical” actually implies. Some are saying that this means a metal is vital to an economy (which of course iron ore is to every economy) but others are interpreting it as being that the supply is in some way threatened or vulnerable. And the latter is where the China Factor is invoked.
A diversified 6% dividend yield portfolio is still possible in these uncertain times
EDITOR: | October 4th, 2022 | October 04, 2022 | Those of a certain vintage remember when interest rates were truly high. Today doesn’t hold a torch to the late 1970s through to the start of the 1990s. Double digits were pretty standard and in the early 1980’s if you didn’t have the best credit rating you could easily have a mortgage or a car loan with an interest rate that was over 20%. My first mortgage was a steal of a deal relative to that at a mere 11%.

Can Americans learn to love mining critical minerals to get them to the green transformation?
EDITOR: | October 4th, 2022 | October 04, 2022 | Democratic Senator Joe Machin from West Virginia is, let’s face it, controversial. His stances on key issues frequently run counter to the majority of his party, and he has blocked key Democratic goals, most notably to abolish the filibuster, which would have enhanced the Democrats ability to pass legislation through the Senate. This hasn’t endeared him to most Democratic voters nor to the Party leadership – but he doesn’t seem to care.

Confirming strain in the market from all said financial media sources – we are all watching the markets, along with you – seeking wisdom and refuge where there is indeed, none… and reveling in the wisdom from contrarians suggesting that this is when the real excitement begins.
