Cardinal Richelieu and the... book by Jean-Vincent Blanchard
Chief minister to King Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu was the architect of a new France in the seventeenth century, and the force behind the nation's rise as a European power. Among the first statesmen to clearly understand the necessity of a balance of powers, he was one of the early realist politicians, practicing in the wake of Niccol? Machiavelli. Truly larger than life, he has captured the imagination of generations, both through his own story...
Fascist Party (PNF) | Definition, Italy, Mussolini, & Symbol
Fascist Italy For 18 months Mussolini ruled through the usual government machinery, pursued a policy of “normalization,” and gradually concentrated power in his own hands. The Fascist squads were incorporated into an official Voluntary Militia for National Security. Ordinary middle-class job seekers flooded into the Fascist Party, making it more respectable and amenable; the nationalists also merged their organization into it, bringing with them much respectable backing in the south.
Queen Victoria: A Personal History
Christopher Hibbert’s acclaimed biography of Queen Victoria is as impressive and authoritative as the great woman herself. In 1837 an eighteen-year-old girl, raised by a German mother, inherited the throne of the United Kingdom. She was to reign as queen – and later Empress of India – for almost sixty-four years, presiding over twenty prime ministers and a period of unprecedented social and political change.
Not half definition and meaning
not half adverb [with neg, ADVERB adjective/adverb, ADVERB noun] Half is sometimes used in negative statements, with a positive meaning, to emphasize a particular fact or quality. For example, if you say 'he isn't half lucky', you mean that he is very lucky. [British, informal, emphasis] You don't half sound confident. I didn't half get into trouble. She eventually decided the acting profession wasn't half bad.

The Rise and Fall of the Medici Bank
‘Considering their profession, which was banking,’ Philippe de Commines, the French diplomat and historian, wrote of the Medici in the fifteenth century, ‘this family was, I think, the greatest in the world.’ Commines had travelled through England and Flanders as well as Italy and France; and what he had seen of the power and influence of the Medici bank ‘almost passed belief’.
Edward VII: The Last Victorian King | Christopher Hibbert | Macmillan
A riveting biography that vividly captures the life and times of the last Victorian king. To his mother, Queen Victoria, he was "poor Bertie," to his wife he was "my dear little man," while the President of France called him "a great English king," and the German Kaiser condemned him as "an old peacock." King Edward VII was all these things and more, as Hibbert reveals in this captivating biography.

The Best Books on War Crimes
Your first book is Nuremberg by Airey Neave. This is a book that I was given by a friend of mine in the army when I was working at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal. Airey Neave was a soldier and a lawyer – a bit like me, I guess. He served in the infantry during the Second World War and it is very sad that he was blown up by the INLA in the House of Commons car park in 1979. It is an interesting book because it gives his personal account of the events at Nuremberg.
Benito Mussolini | Biography, Definition, Facts, Rise, & Death
Early life Mussolini was the first child of the local blacksmith. In later years he expressed pride in his humble origins and often spoke of himself as a “man of the people.” The Mussolini family was, in fact, less humble than he claimed—his father, a part-time socialist journalist as well as a blacksmith, was the son of a lieutenant in the National Guard, and his mother was a schoolteacher—but the Mussolinis were certainly poor.
Nelson: A Personal History
Christopher Hibbert. Addison Wesley Publishing Company, $30 (472pp) ISBN 978-0-201-62457-1 Self-promoting, vain, risk-taking, thirsty for recognition and glory, English admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)-who crippled Napoleon's fleets in the French Revolutionary wars-fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a sea officer. In this rousing, seaworthy biography, we meet a vexatious man whose short temper was exacerbated by the loss of an arm and an eye in combat.
