Director of Development and Community Relations Ramsey Lawrence has been speaking to churches and civic organizations and spreading the word about the nonprofit’s Florida arm since 2020. Embrace Florida Kids has four programs. “First, we teach people how to parent,” says Lawrence.
The Housing Revolution Starts Now: Meet Visionary Bekah Manley
By Christopher Manson Bekah Manley is a holistic realtor, meaning that she looks well beyond the structure of a house. “I take the physical, spiritual and emotional into consideration,” she explains. “I go a little deeper than most realtors when it comes to finding an environment in which a person will best thrive. To me, a house is more than a structure. It’s a sanctuary for your soul.” Bekah has called the Emerald Coast her home since 2017.
Beyond the Bicentennial: Reflections of Walton County History
By Christopher Manson Last year marked the 200th anniversary of Walton County, which at one time was much larger than its current 1,028 square miles. In 1846, portions of the original territory were given away to help form Washington County. Two years later, part of the northeast section was given to Holmes County. And in 1915, a western chunk—along with an eastern portion of Santa Rosa County—was untitled and released to form what is now Okaloosa County.
The Best Ergodic Fiction
You’re recommending five books in the category of novels that feel like games or puzzles. Can you tell us a little bit more about what that means? I’m obsessed with novels that feel like puzzles even if they’re not overtly puzzle books. The technical term is ergodic fiction, which can involve narrative metalepsis (which I study), and it all sort of fits under the umbrella of metafiction.
Team Wegner Embarks on Ultra Paddle Event to Benefit Cystic Fibrosis
By Christopher Manson This month, local anesthesiologist and paddleboard enthusiast Ryan Wegner heads to the Bahamas for a massive 80-mile, approximately 16-hour paddle event benefiting Piper’s Angels Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis. The Palm Beach Gardens-based nonprofit hosts its 10th annual Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis June 21-25. Wegner, the father of twin Autistic 14-year-old boys, heard about the event from his cousin, who will join him for the Crossing.
May is ArtsQuest Month in South Walton
Celebrating its 35th year this month, the Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) of Walton County’s ArtsQuest Fine Arts Festival is one of the organization’s signature – and biggest – events. In recent years, the CAA has expanded this into Art Month, with visual, performing, and literary arts programming in diverse formats at various venues throughout Walton County.
Do the Math: 100 Men Who Care Emerald Coast
By Christopher Manson Scott Rude calls himself “the founding member” of 100 Men Who Care Emerald Coast. Rude (pronounced Rudy) is “semi-retired” and spent three years teaching business management at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. After leaving the university, he worked for Shell Oil in New Orleans. He and his family visited our beaches on the weekends and decided this is where they wanted to live. Jean, Rude’s wife of 24 years, was very happy with the choice they made.
X Marks the Spot: Literary Treasure Hunts
The human urge to uncover hidden things is behind the enduring appetite for crime fiction, where we turn the pages to search for the truth. The impulse to solve clues and find buried treasure explains the success of everything from The Da Vinci Code to The Goonies, and hatched a sub-genre that sparks the kind of obsession you’d find in the pages of a psychological thriller.
Editor's Choice - Bosch Season 4, Laura Lippman, Paddington 2 and More
Season 4 of Amazon’s Bosch, based on Michael Connelly’s iconic detective (brilliantly portrayed by Titus Welliver), derives much of its storyline from the 1998 novel Angels Flight. But the civil rights angle makes this 10-episode run as timely as ever, and several plot threads from the previous seasons are likely to be resolved to your satisfaction. This series keeps getting better with each go-round.
Editor's Choice - "Sneaky Pete," Death Row Memoirs and More
Gwendy's Button Box, a novella by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar, was first published in 2017 and I’m embarrassed to say I missed it until I spotted a copy at the Destin Library. This coming of age story—seen through the eyes of a pre-adolescent girl—is charming and, of course, a touch creepy.
DVR Alert: “Pickler” Returns for Season Three Aug. 3
I Love Kellie Pickler, the reality show documenting the life of a country music diva, returns to CMT Aug. 3. The show also features Pickler’s songwriter husband Kyle Jacobs and our pals Andi and Ken Johnson, who were recently on Beachcomber’s cover. “There will be a bunch more fun shenanigans that Kellie and Kyle get into, many times roping their friends in, too,” says Andi.
A Giant Leap for the Beachcomber Music Awards
“A fine night at the Beachcomber Music Awards... AJ’s is the perfect venue… I’m particularly happy for Nik Flagstar, Strange Tang and the Green Door. “Also, I’m starting my campaign to induct Doug ‘Dr. D’ Dickerson into the 2017 Hall of Fame…” - Joe Fingas The Beachcomber Music Awards were presented Monday, Feb. 29, at AJ’s Seafood & Oyster House in Destin.
Refugee stories: Would they get in today?
zoom Canada’s refugee system has undergone a revolution by a decade of incremental changes. The policy and legal shifts are complex and frankly tedious. The tragedy is that this minutiae — that begs us to glaze over and scroll past — has the potential to alter lives. It’s only human stories that breathe life into paper changes. Until we see the impact on individual lives, we can’t tell what is fair or punitive, reasonable or cruel, good or bad for Canada.
