Articles by Christopher Simon Sykes
The latest essay every day.
It is an unusual stroke of luck that someone so well qualified as Christopher Sykes should have undertaken the biography of Evelyn Waugh. Mr. Sykes is not only an accomplished writer, a Roman Catholic (interested in doctrine, but of tolerant views), a wartime soldier (with a gallant record), a man born into a world into which Waugh aspired (and eventually achieved), but also a lifetime friend who served with Waugh in the army and who is able to examine his subject critically but affectionately.
The real story behind Madfabulous: How the 5th Marquess of Anglesey dazzled audiences, shocked society and squandered the family fortune
2 hours ago It's hard enough to get an electrician these days - and they cost a lot - but Britain needs to train up thousands of them and it's spending more than £60bn on the first stage of a major re-wiring task. The project stretches from the north of Scotland, marching across hill and glen, striding into the …
Rolling with the Stones. Fifty years ago, Christopher Simon Sykes photographed the band on their American tour
In the early summer of 1975, I found myself on tour round the USA with the Rolling Stones, employed to take photographs for a tour diary. It was my first ever photographic assignment covering rock ’n’ roll – I’d previously specialised in photographing the interiors of stately homes. The job had come about after a chance meeting with the Stones’ financial manager, Prince Rupert Loewenstein, who told me the band were looking for someone to put together a diary of their upcoming tour of the USA.

I once met Jean-Luc Godard - Christopher Sykes
JEAN -LUC AND THE UNICORN By Christopher Sykes I once met the great French film director Jean-Luc Godard, the man who turned cinema upside down with ‘A Bout de Souffle’, gave the world the jump-cut, and said things like “All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun.” Godard, Francois Truffaut, and Louis Malle are a large part of why I wanted to get into films, so the idea of meeting Godard was a big thing. He won’t remember me, of course, but I won’t forget him.
Lighting Up Leisure — Parks & Rec Business (PRB)
Maximize daylighting to reduce costs By Christopher Sykes City officials in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had wanted to build a new 43,500-square-foot facility because the Kirkwood Community Recreation Center was dark and underused. Instead, new glazing on the windows removed glare from the basketball courts and virtually eliminated any need for overhead lights. “The basketball players love it,” says Josh Toutman, Kirkwood’s Recreation Director.
GDC Interim Orders During The Pandemic

The pandemic has made "covid security" vitally important to medical practitioners. The dental profession is no exception. Practitioners who breach covid security have been swiftly brought before the Interim Orders Committee ("the IOC").
A Grave Mistake? Ecclesiastical court rules against Irish language inscription on headstone (via Passle)
The Church of England's ecclesiastical courts do not often hit the headlines, and certainly not the Irish headlines. Today, however, Irish newspapers thejournal.ie, The Irish Times and InTallaght are reporting on a recent judgment of the Consistory Court of the Diocese of Coventry. The reason?

The Coronavirus Bill and Adult Social Care (via Passle)
The Coronavirus Bill was introduced to the House of Commons on Thursday 19 March and had its first reading on the same day. On Monday 23 March, the 322-page Bill will go through its second and, it is likely, third reading. It is expected to gain Royal Assent by Wednesday or Thursday this week (25 or 26 March). The Act is set to expire two years after the date on which it is passed. This is subject to a power to alter the expiry date to make it earlier or up to six months later (clause 76).
My Grandfather: Scapegoat for a Century of Middle East Madness
The Sykes-Picot Agreement, signed 100 years ago, led to disasters in the Mideast. Yet, as Sykes’s grandson and biographer tells us, Sykes himself was a young idealist. That secret pact was drawn up between the British and French two years into World War I, looking to divide up the Ottoman Empire in the event of their victory. It laid the groundwork for the creation of Israel and defined several national boundaries in the region which still exist, and are still being challenged, today.
