Abstract Empirical and theoretical support is emerging for a view of macroevolution characterised by species’ phenotypes tracking continually-moving adaptive peaks, interspersed with rare large shifts in the position of those peaks, likely corresponding to changes in species’ adaptive zones. But we lack understanding of the factors that control these movements.
Abstract Macroevolution posed difficulties for Darwin and later theorists because species’ phenotypes frequently change abruptly, or experience long periods of stasis, both counter to the theory of incremental change or gradualism.
Practical<-- --> implications • The gut microbiome and metabolome of athletes differs across sports classification groupings. • Diet is not the driver of differences in the gut microbiome and metabolome across these sports classification groups. • The difference in microbiomes and metabolome across groupings, in the absence of significant dietary differences, suggests a role for exercise type as a contributing factor.
