What is driving the green backlash in European urban politics?
Cities are widely considered to be progressive bastions against the tide of populism and growth of right-wing movements across Europe. But recent election results show that cities are not immune to the divisive discourses surrounding the green transition.
EU at a crossroads: Time for Von der Leyen to lead
“President von der Leyen has sought to promote pro-European cooperation in the face of multiple crises. But she faces a major problem within her own political family, where too often, narrow partisan interests and frequent cooperation with the far right undermines the unity and ambition that Europe so desperately needs,” said Vula Tsetsi, European Green Party Co-Chair. “This summer made it undeniable: the climate crisis is here, and action is more urgent than ever.
Greenland is at a crossroads, but its people are determined to stay strong
THE WHITE HOUSE in Washington seems far away as you look out at icebergs from the seaside town of Nuuk in Greenland, but Donald Trump’s sabre-rattling is never far from people’s lips, as I discovered on a visit there last month. I travelled to Greenland in my capacity as co-chair of the European Green Party. Our delegation included Green and European Free Alliance MEPs from many European countries.
Trump is a challenge to the EPP - wake up, or move further right?
In just a few weeks, Donald Trump has initiated a supernova of diplomatic destruction, rupturing ties with Europe and shredding the multilateral world order that has been in place since 1945.

Appointment procedures for TEN-T Coordinators
Priority question for written answer P-001170/2024 to the Commission Rule 138 Ciarán Cuffe (Verts/ALE) Under Regulation (EU) 1315/2013[1] and its revision, the Commission has the right to nominate coordinators for the corridors and horizontal priorities of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
Rights for persons with disabilities when travelling by air
Question for written answer E-000867/2024 to the Commission Rule 138 Ciarán Cuffe (Verts/ALE), Grace O'Sullivan (Verts/ALE) Insufficiently strong protections and rights are afforded to persons with disabilities under EU law, such as there being no right to travel end-to-end with their mobility equipment. This can mean being denied boarding or mobility equipment being put in the hold, where it can be damaged. To make matters worse, damage to this equipment is then also insufficiently compensated.
Creation of an agency for road safety
Question for written answer E-000792/2024 to the Commission Rule 138 Ciarán Cuffe (Verts/ALE) Given the tens of thousands of people who lose their lives or are seriously injured on Europe’s roads every year, more must urgently be done to address road safety.
Reflecting diversity in the EU institutions
Question for written answer E-000611/2024 to the Commission Rule 138 Ciarán Cuffe (Verts/ALE) The EU should be a manifestation of fairness and equality, including within its institutions. However, recent reports suggest that the institutions could do much more to reinforce opportunity and equality in their hiring processes. In the first instance, there is a distinct lack of minority groups reflected in the staffing of the EU institutions.
Encouraging public transport use for young people and the elderly
Question for written answer E-000612/2024 to the Commission Rule 138 Ciarán Cuffe (Verts/ALE) Increasing the ability of citizens to use active and public transport modes is crucial for tackling transport-related emissions and improving quality of life. Young people and the elderly often require extra support to be able to make full use of public transport systems, particularly as they have been hit hard by the cost of living crisis.
Geothermal: Europe’s next renewable opportunity
Geothermal heat, especially when paired with district heating networks for broad local distribution, is an abundant resource just below our feet. Europe needs more of it to decarbonise the building sector and kick its fossil fuel habit, writes a cross-party group of five MEPs. This op-ed is co-signed by the following members of the European Parliament: Martin Hojsik (Renew Europe), Seán Kelly (EPP), Niels Fuglsang (S&D), Ciarán Cuffe (Greens/EFA), Morten Helveg Petersen (Renew Europe).
A fair and innovative framework to decarbonise Europe's buildings
Prioritising upgrades for buildings will accelerate the rollout of green technologies, while improving the lives of people living in energy poverty and reducing energy consumption. Energy innovation is driving the decarbonisation of Europe's buildings, for the betterment of our pockets, our health, and the planet. This innovation is not limited to technology, however.
Discrimination against non-national teachers (Lettori) in Italian universities
Question for written answer E-001630/2023 to the Commission Rule 138 Clare Daly (The Left), Mick Wallace (The Left), Luke Ming Flanagan (The Left), Billy Kelleher (Renew), Colm Markey (PPE), Ciarán Cuffe (Verts/ALE), Barry Andrews (Renew) Infringement proceeding INFR(2021)4055 was opened against Italy for non-implementation of enforcement ruling C-119/04, the last of four rulings in a litigation extending 36 years back to the first referral of the Alluè case to the Court of Justice of the...
Trees a crowd - the movement to green Europe’s city streets
To get from one campus of Brussels’ Free University (ULB) to another, students and lecturers must walk along a busy main road. The path is lined by beautiful old trees that offer shade in the summer and some much-needed greenery. Yet tree roots have warped the pavement, making it difficult for even the most sure-footed pedestrians.
Time to swap car-centric urban design for pedestrian and cycle-friendly planning
One hundred years ago, Swiss-French architect Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier, sketched out plans for his vision of the city of the future. He proposed reinventing the urban space by demolishing existing buildings and streets, and replacing them with skyscrapers and wide roads. Le Corbusier prided himself on architecture on a human scale, but his ideas for city planning were destructive and unashamedly put the car in prime position, with pedestrians subservient.
Europe Day and the battle for Europe
The European Union represents a modern day miracle. We used to be enemies but are now allies, even friends. We have lived in peace for almost 80 years, something which is historically new for Europe. We live comparably well and support each other. We base ourselves on universal values and have created laws and institutions which protect those values. We have wonderful cultures, heritage and landscapes. We have world leading football teams and we have Eurovision.
Parliamentary question | Eurocontrol | E-001178/2023 | European Parliament
Question for written answer E-001178/2023 to the Council Rule 138 Ciarán Cuffe (Verts/ALE) Following reports[1]from November 2022 that the airline Ryanair was given special treatment at Eurocontrol, it was reported on 28 March 2023 that Eamonn Brennan, the body’s Director General until December 2022, has joined Ryanair’s board as a non-executive director. This is less than three months after he left Eurocontrol.
Energy Poverty Handbook
Introduction A secure, stable, and affordable supply of energy is needed in our homes for heating, cooling, and powering appliances. People experience energy poverty when they cannot afford to access an adequate energy supply in their homes. As a result, they struggle to heat, cool, or light their homes. Energy poverty can occur due to low incomes, high energy bills, and energy inefficient buildings. The negative consequences on a person’s physical and mental health and wellbeing can be severe.
Ciarán Cuffe: Global climate action is not just for COP
YOU MAY BE surprised to learn that the first time the role of fossil fuels in the climate crisis was referenced in a COP agreement was in Glasgow in 2021. A call to “phase-down” coal and “phase-out” fossil fuel subsidies was hard fought, and hard won. Phasing out fossil fuels is an essential step on the way to decarbonisation and building a carbon-neutral world.

THE GOOD INFORMATION PROJECT AT COP26
Poll: Are you using the Covid-19 tracker app? PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS yesterday confirmed 1,631 new cases of Covid-19 in Ireland. As of 8am yesterday, there were 503 Covid-19 patients in hospital, of which 101 are in ICU. Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said in a statement accompanying yesterday’s figures: “Incidence of Covid-19 is increasing at a concerning rate. The seven-day moving average is now 2,043, up from 1,138 only three weeks ago.
Opinion: Will things be different at COP26 this year? Yes. There's a sense of urgency in the air
AS A GREEN campaigner and politician for over thirty years, each year feels like Groundhog Day. A travelling circus of climate scientists, campaigners, and politicians travel to far-flung places to attend the Conference of the Parties (COP) to try and negotiate a plan of action to halt catastrophic and irreversible global heating. Will it be different this time around when this year’s event starts in Glasgow on Sunday? In short – yes. There is a sense of urgency in the air.

Poll: Should the practice of boiling lobsters alive be banned in Ireland? THE UK GOVERNMENT is considering a ban on boiling lobsters alive, Sky News is reporting. If the government chooses to pursue the ban, it’s believed a clause would be introduced into the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill. The Bill is currently making its way through the House of Lords. Currently, the bill only covers vertebrates – animals that have a backbone – and not invertebrates such as lobsters, crabs and squids.
Ciarán Cuffe: Court cases are leading the fight on climate change across Europe
AS THE PLANET burns, across Europe we are seeing young people and campaigners fight for environmental justice in the courts. In Germany, the 2019 Luisa Neubauer case made history. Germany’s supreme constitutional court ruled that the Government’s climate measures were insufficient to protect future generations after a complaint from environmentalist groups. In Portugal, young climate activists have taken a case to the European Court of Human Rights against all European countries.

Poll: Do you think the lifting of the Covid measures is going at the right pace? THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN to reopen the country in June and July is the biggest and most significant shift back to normal times since the crisis began. The plans cover everything from pilot outdoor live events with hundreds of attendees in June, to the return of international travel and indoor dining in July.
Ciarán Cuffe: Dublin City Council needs a new 'public realm czar' to oversee public spaces
IT IS JUST over a month since Taoiseach Micheál Martin said, ‘Outdoors will be the theme for the Summer’. After a long winter of being told ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ young people naturally headed out to meet their friends in Dublin city centre and alongside the canals. Sadly, their good intentions to stay outdoors have been thwarted by the temporary closing of Portobello Plaza, and suggestions by An Garda Siochána that streets could be closed off to prevent people from gathering.

Poll: Are you planning to get away somewhere in Ireland this summer? WITH TRAVEL CURTAILED for the foreseeable many people won’t be taking a trip abroad until later down the line, possibly not until 2021. As Ireland gradually eases its Covid-19 restrictions, travelling outside one’s own county is allowed from 20 July. With summer in full swing you may be tempted to take a break down the country somewhere or head to another town for a change of scenery.
Ciarán Cuffe: There's an extraordinary opportunity here for the Greens in government
As members of the Green Party, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil debate the merits of the new programme for government, the leaders of the Greens arguably have the toughest task getting the deal over the line, with two-thirds of the party’s membership needed to carry the proposal. As the battle for the hearts and minds of the Irish green movement begins, we invited two representatives with opposing views to state their case.

Poll: Do you prefer sunshine or rainy days? WELL, IT’S BEEN a week of blue skies across the country, with little rain in sight. While it’s forecast to be colder over the weekend than in recent days, conditions, for the most part, are due to remain dry and sunny. Temperatures today are to range between 9 and 15 degrees. With little to no rain in sight at the moment, we’re wondering – are you itching for a rainy day? Or are you loving the sunshine?
Opinion: We need a national unity government immediately to battle Covid-19
JUST OVER TWO months ago on 20 January, I got a call from a friend. “What do you think about this coronavirus story? It seems to be quite an issue in China”. “Storm in a teacup”, I replied. Ever since I worked in Beijing a few years ago I had kept a list of commentators on Chinese issues on Twitter. Sure, the coronavirus had been mentioned, but it wasn’t that big an issue, or so it seemed. Scroll forward a month, and I took another good look at China, and by this stage, they were in lockdown.
Opinion: There is space for 15,000 homes within walking distance of Dublin's O'Connell Street
WHAT IF THERE was a magic wand that could deliver thousands of new homes in Dublin and it was hidden right under our noses? Well, if we look closely at Dublin City there are hundreds of hectares of land close to the city centre that could deliver the homes we need to tackle the housing crisis. What’s more, much of these lands are owned or controlled by the State making it easy to repurpose them for housing and related uses.
