Both ENDS: Partners fighting for rights within Natural Resource exploration in Uganda
Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA), an organization that Both ENDS has worked with, for example, is a community based organization that addresses natural resource management. By mobilizing the community to plant trees, and training them on agroecological practices, KEA has improved food and nutrition security, reduced poverty, and improved soil fertility and biodiversity.
Both ENDS: Both ENDS in solidarity with Justice for Brumadinho!
272 innocent people were killed. An tsunami of toxic mud unleashed, some 12 million cubic metres of ore tailing into the surrounding areas. January 25th, 2024 is the solemn 5-year mark of the Brumadinho upstream mining dam collapse. This was Brazil’s worst environmental and industrial disaster. The responsible company, Vale S.A., has made multiple commitments to repair the situation and improve the safety standards of their operations.
Both ENDS: New database names companies blacklisted by global investors and banks
A coalition of NGOs today launched the Financial Exclusions Tracker, a new website that tracks which companies are being excluded by investors and banks for sustainability reasons. Most excluded corporations are barred due to links to fossil fuels, weapons or tobacco. This public dataset is the first of its kind. It aims to inform investors and banks, civil society and media about which corporations are blacklisted by investors.
Both ENDS: Uganda’s Energy Future
In Uganda, the energy access situation is dire. About 80% of the population lives in rural areas, and only 7% of these citizens have access to electricity, the rest relying on firewood, charcoal and paraffin for their daily energy needs. Where the electricity grid reaches Ugandans, the price of electricity is too high, both for ordinary citizens and for manufacturers and small and medium enterprise owners.
Both ENDS: Dutch Pension funds do not vote in line with climate ambitions
None of the companies involved in fossil fuels has drawn up a credible business plan compatible with the 1.5 degree goal agreed in Paris. Participants in pension plans have been calling on their pension funds for many years to withdraw from the fossil sector, but too little comes of that in practice. Some pension funds continue to invest in the sector with the stated intention to use their influence as shareholders to push fossil companies in the right direction.
Pensioenfonds ABP laat duurzame kansen onbenut
Both ENDS: "Stop Fossil Finance" block Climate March
Still, more funds are spent on the fossil industry than on sustainable solutions. Banks, pension funds, insurers and governments keep investing in fossil infrastructure which endangers people and the environment. Therefore we call on financial institutions to stop funding the climate crisis.
Both ENDS: Action rather than words please! Dutch pension funds and climate voting
Making pension funds more sustainable Pension funds have a lot of influence because of their enormous assets. Both ENDS therefore wants pension funds such as the Dutch ABP to withdraw their investments from the fossil industry and to invest sustainably instead.
Both ENDS: Divest from EACOP before it’s too late
EACOP will transport crude oil from the Albertine region in northwest Uganda to Tanga, a port in Tanzania from where it will be exported around the world. The oil drilling and the pipeline threatens biodiversity, water supply and fishing resources for millions of people and displace thousands of households. It now already leads to human rights violations, especially targeted at activists speaking out against EACOP**. EACOP has the dubious honour to become a replicate of the Niger Delta trauma.
