The Measure of Our Cups
We fill our cups and recite the seder over them, the wine rippling with the stories of our ancestors. Throughout the night, we drink four cups that overflow with our joy, our blessings, our exodus. But, at the seder, we also spill ten drops, one for each plague. A drop of red from a fingertip onto the plate, in commemoration of the suffering of the Egyptians.
Ranking The Dining Halls Based On How Likely My Parents Would Be To Unenroll Me
Oh god, they might already be unenrolling me now. Dining halls. We eat there! Sometimes, we enjoy it! But if I’ve learned anything from my two semesters and one month of eating at Barnumbia dining halls, it’s that my parents should never ever step foot into a single one of them.
Nafissa Thompson-Spires: On Humor And Social Activism - Bwog
Staff Writer Clara Goldberg attended a lecture with award–winning author Nafissa Thompson-Spires. In a dimly lit lecture room, Columbia kicked off their first lecture of the Creative Writing Lecture Series. As the attendees of the event found their seats, holding on to their plates of deli sandwiches and plastic cups of red wine, the author leading the lecture was introduced, Nafissa Thompson-Spires. Nafissa Thompson-Spires is the author of the short story collection Heads of the Colored People.
Gold Hysteria | New Voices
The first time The Child appeared, I was eating sparks. My mouth hung open like a panting dog as I hacked away at the rock. The impact sent red streaking and the smell of it was seeping onto my tongue. It was blazing hot, the heat from the sun radiated through the mine, trapping it and burning the men to their very core. I brought the pickaxe back, resting it on my shoulder, and dragging a dirt-caked hand across my forehead.
The Pittsburgh synagogue shooting’s toll on the gun debate
On Saturday, Oct. 27, I was asleep in my room until noon. I rolled out of bed and grabbed a late breakfast at Franklin Dining Commons while still in my pajamas. My friends and I hung out in a dorm for a couple hours, and I eventually made my way out for a birthday lunch with a group of friends in Amherst Center. We came back to our building around 5 p.m. and collapsed in the lounge from our long day. It wasn’t until then that I decided to check Facebook and do my usual mindless scrolling.

Graffiti beautifies UMass
Cities around the country have battled with graffiti artists for centuries, some embracing the distinctive art form and some criminalizing it. Over recent years, cities have utilized street artists’ talent in an attempt to beautify their communities. In many towns, including Amherst, street art can be found on electrical boxes scattered across the area, as well as on the sides of local stores.
Aid for Hurricane Florence vs. Hurricane Maria: what changed?
Last week, Hurricane Florence hit the Carolinas as a Category one storm, leaving 37 dead and 343,000 without power. President Trump visited the Carolinas last Wednesday to assess the damages just days after the storm. Hurricane Maria, a Category five storm, hit Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in mid-September 2017. Since then, the death toll has risen to nearly 3,000 people and power was just restored in August 2018. Trump did not visit the island until October.
