Register Your Interest Now: SALHUB Training Courses for PNT, EO and SatComms
The Space Applications Learning Hub (SALHUB) is one of five new projects recently announced by the UK Space Agency (UKSA) to help tackle key skills gaps identified by the recent UK space sector skills survey. This UKSA funding has been provided to boost the availability of training and to break down barriers to opportunities within the fast-growing, high-tech sector.
Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng elected President of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN)
Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng elected President of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng, CBE, EBS, CEng, FREng, FRIN, FICE, FCIHT, FInstCES, was elected President at the RIN's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 18 June 2024. Professor Ochieng is a serving Trustee and Member of both the Council and Technical Committee of the RIN.
Navigation Services for non-drivers
Active Transport: Navigation Services for non-drivers This talk will look at the challenges of using navigation services, that have been initially designed for in-car use, for pedestrians and wheelchair users. Active travel and non-drivers navigation services still need some customisations to accommodate the needs of other user groups, including pedestrians or wheelchair users.
Ocean Sailing
This year’s joint RIN SCG/CA annual meeting and talk will take the form of a live webinar with Paul Heiney. Earlier this year the RCC Pilotage Foundation published ‘Ocean Sailing’ by Paul Heiney. His intention was to gather as much information as he could for people who had actually done it, rather than those who held strong views but had limited experience. He will share with you some of those experiences, and often some surprising conclusions about the craft of sailing oceans.
The Dutch Raid on the Medway
Chris is a retired retail jeweller who has an abiding interest in sailing, navigation and related historical matters. He started giving talks some 50 years ago to assist his late father when he joined the family business. The topics were hallmarks, gemmology and horology in fact all related to his work. He started sailing properly offshore in the mid 1970’s and taught the RYA syllabus at their local night school for 10 years.
Challenges & Potential Solutions
Navigation and Wayfinding for the Visually Impaired: Challenges and Potential Solutions Navigation technologies have seen rapid development in recent times for a wide variety of applications. However, despite many attempts, the realisation of systems capable of guiding visually impaired persons in all environments (indoors and outdoors) remains a challenge.
Positions of trust
Positions of trust: can we work with navigation systems we struggle to understand? Ramsey's talk will cover how the steady pace of ever-smarter software is being used to overcome some major challenges in positioning and autonomy. With the boom in Deep Neural Networks however comes a significant challenge in being able to understand - and therefore trust - how these systems achieve the results they do.
Quantum Sensors in Navigation
Co-hosted by the UK Quantum Technology Hub Sensors and Timing and the Royal Institute of Navigation The reliance on GNSS for position and timing has recently come under close scrutiny from government and professional organisations around the world. A series of reports about GNSS service interruptions have outlined not only the cost to the economy and the risks to safety, but also satellite system vulnerabilities.
Enabling the next generation of GPS technology with Supercorrelation
Enabling the next generation of GPS technology with Supercorrelation Focal Point Positioning have developed a new method for processing GNSS radio signals called Supercorrelation which dramatically improves the performance of the earliest stage of radio processing. The software update removes multipath interference at the correlator level, and provides the ability to determine signal arrival angle without adding any new hardware to a standard GNSS device.
Training: Securing Positioning & Timing
Training: Securing Positioning & Timing - Session 4 This session includes the following presentations: Terry Moore - Adding resilience: additional sensors
Satellite Navigation Systems Overview
Satellite Navigation Systems Overview John Pottle, Director of the Royal Institute of Navigation, will put into context what the hundreds of navigation satellites in space are all for and how they work together. This webinar will explain the similarities and differences between global and regional satellite navigation systems, how they are co-ordinated, and by whom. The space-based augmentation systems will also be covered: what are these and how do they help?
