The Emptiness of Success
From Another Life Is Possible, this week’s featured book. Explore more stories on the book’s website. Ironically, it was out of a place of financial success that I was able to see through the American Dream. After dropping out of college I had built up a successful graphic design and advertising agency near Washington, DC. I had everything I wanted; I could go anywhere; I could buy anything I desired. I was pulling down a mid-six-figure salary.
PloughCast 71: On Giving Up All One’s Money
Susannah speaks with Clare Stober and Marianne Wright about living without money. Clare didn’t grow up in the Bruderhof – she made the decision to join when she was in her early thirties, after a successful career. She describes her spiritual quest, and the doubts and worries that came with considering joining – and the freedom that she has felt since then. Marianne is fourth-generation Bruderhof, has never had her own bank account, but the decision to join was no less personal and intense.
Retooling the Plough
Did you notice anything different on the front cover of the latest Plough Quarterly? If so, you’ve caught our new logo, created to hold its own in any corner, while giving the artwork its due. Plough started in Germany in 1920 as a biweekly magazine, Das neue Werk (The New Work), published by the intentional community now known as the Bruderhof.

I’d long been interested in the idea of vocation – why and how does a person become convinced of a lifelong calling, with the self-sacrifice and self-surrender that this requires? For the Bruderhof centenary, then, my editors and I decided not to focus on the community’s century of history, but rather to tell the vocation stories of the men and women who had joined it.
The Measure of a Life Well Lived
Just over a year ago, I sat by my father’s bed for ten days and nights, watching him die. We connected through touch as I held his weakening hand, swabbed out his mouth, and did all I could to ease his last passage. I stroked his forearms, still so familiar, and recalled everything I’d known about him and done with him, this man who had always been there.
