“Let me say this,” as Thomas Merton once wrote, “before rain becomes a utility that they can plan and distribute for money.” The water system in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) in the Eastern Cape of South Africa is in crisis, but this crisis is evolving to increasingly burden the working class in favor of wealth and industry. This happens in two ways: through water bills and through a reduction in household consumption.

When subsidies are lifted and the prices of essential foods spike, social uprisings follow—and they are nearly always severely suppressed. Uprisings followed the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) interventions after the debt crisis in the 1970s and 1980s.

The mother of all failures

Em português. In Angola, the pandemic is the mother of incompetence. In his state of the nation speech, President João Lourenço declared the COVID-19 pandemic responsible for all the failures of 2020. But it was less the pandemic itself than incompetence in state management that caused problems. First, let’s discuss corruption, a close cousin of incompetence. Currently under an agreement with the IMF, the Angolan state should be more careful in how it manages pandemic related funds.
