Clement Tan has been China Stocks Correspondent for Reuters News since March 2011. Based in Hong Kong with stints in Shanghai, he covers the stock markets in the mainland and the Chinese territory, where most foreign investors express their views on the world’s second-largest economy. He is now looking to move to Beijing to write about economics, companies or politics.
He was previously based in Washington, where he covered immigration and campaign finance as an intern for Tribune newspapers, mainly the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. His internship experience also spanned stints at Reuters, The Associated Press and The Straits Times in Singapore, BBC News in New York and The Atlantic magazine in Washington.
Fluent in Mandarin, he is particularly interested in issues relating to inequalities and the relationship between money and power. Clement attended the Columbia Journalism School and read Sociology at the National University of Singapore, where he was also part of the University Scholars Program and founded the Southeast Asian city-state’s first editorially-independent campus online newspaper.
