Samsung's Subscriptions and the 'Labubu Effect'
Do you subscribe to Netflix or own a Labubu plush toy (or bought one for your kids)? The influence of Netflix is clearly pervasive now, thanks to its several blockbuster productions like the Korean-produced Squid Game. Meanwhile, Pop Mart’s Labubu is ubiquitous and sought by celebrities from K-pop BlackPink’s Lisa to David Beckham. But how does Netflix’s well-known subscription model relate to Labubu? The short answer is the Experience Economy, and we will dive deeper into that idea below.
AI gets personal: A glimpse into the consumer future
AI isn’t just transforming businesses, it’s quietly reshaping the consumer experience in ways that are more personal, emotional, and surprising. For B2C brands, this evolution brings both new opportunities to engage customers and new expectations to meet. For technology vendors, it opens up a fast-growing market to empower brands with the tools, platforms, and infrastructure they’ll need to compete.
Humain's Horizon Pro: A PC that's not really about the PC
Qualcomm invited analysts to its annual Snapdragon Summit again this year, where the spotlight was shone on the company’s latest processors for both phones and PCs, as well as the role of NPUs (neural processing units) in enabling new on-device AI experiences. My colleagues and I wrote extensively about these announcements here.
Where Were AI PCs at Computex 2025?
Despite Computex’s push toward areas like data center AI and smart factories, PCs still have a long history at the show, reflective of the industry in Taiwan. Last year in particular was a particularly notable surge with the big AI PC push from the likes of Intel, AMD and Qualcomm. But this year was seemingly more quiet – at least, in terms of keynote addresses.
The Quieter (But Still Important) PC Side of MWC 2025
The annual Mobile World Congress trade show, as the name suggests, is normally a telco and handset-driven event, and this year’s event in Barcelona last week was no exception. Even though vendors that we associate with PCs like Intel, AMD, and Dell had on-site booths as well, they were more focused on telco and data center opportunities rather than PCs. That doesn’t mean that there weren’t significant PC market developments though.
From Discard to Demand: The Growing Popularity of Used Smartphones
India ships around 145-150 million new smartphones per year for the domestic market, ranking it second globally after China in annual shipping volume. There are approximately 650 million smartphone users in India or about 46% smartphone penetration in the country. There is no other market of this size with such huge untapped potential, making India a very attractive market for all smartphone ecosystem participants from brands to component makers.
AI PCs in the Spotlight at IFA 2024
IFA has traditionally been a home entertainment and appliances show targeting the European market, but this year there were a lot of global PC announcements as vendors were eager to get the word out on AI PCs, particularly after Computex in Taiwan a few months ago. We were excited to be on the ground in Berlin this month to catch the action.
The AI PC Rally of 2024: the First Salvo
We’re a few weeks into what I’m calling the AI PC Rally of 2024, where nearly back-to-back industry events pull back the curtain to reveal more AI capabilities and use cases to make the latest generation of PCs and phones more compelling. So far, Google I/O and Microsoft Build have passed. In a few more weeks’ time, Computex and Apple’s WWDC beckon.
The Rundown on AI Phones and Devices at MWC24
There should be no surprise that there were plenty of device-related announcements at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week, with this year’s AI buzzword featured prominently across them.
