Elementalia: Chapter IV Air
Humans throughout history have been fascinated by the elements. Unfathomable forces of nature, they entered our myths and minds aeons ago. There’s no time when we’re not in their thrall.
Crossing Thresholds - Part 4 of 6
Photo by Mark Lennihan - AP “With the personification of his destiny to guide and aid him, the hero goes forward in his adventure until he comes to the “threshold guardian” at the entrance to the zone of magnified power. Such custodians bound the world in the four directions –also up and down – standing for the limits of the hero’s present sphere, or life horizon.
Hear Demos of Madonna Performing Punk Songs with Her Pre-Fame Band, Breakfast Club (1979)
Isn’t it wonderful when long-forgotten recordings get dusted off and exposed to a much wider audience, thrusting little-remembered artists into the spotlight, perhaps for the first time in their lives? Think Connie Converse… The Shaggs… Madonna… Wait, who?
Spirituality & Practice
One night a man was crying. Allah! Allah! His lips grew sweet with the praising, until a cynic said, “So! I have heard you calling out, but have you ever gotten any response?” The man had no answer to that. He quit praying and fell into a confused sleep. He dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of souls, in a thick, green foliage. “Why did you stop praising?” “This longing you express is the return message.” The grief you cry out from draws you toward union.
What Wants to Come Through Me Now
Gitanjali led directly to Rabindranath Tagore winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, the year the book was published. William Butler Yeats, one of the foremost poets of the 20th century, was among those in the West championing the mysticism and lyricism of Tagore in those years before the First World War changed the world forever. Gitanjali means “song offerings” in Bengali, the original language of these poems.
What Wants to Come Through Me Now
“Five years after the Gitanjali, in 1917, Tagore, assisted by Evelyn Underhill, published an English translation of Kabir (the 14th-century Hindu-Muslim poet), a favorite of Rabindranath’s. Kabir’s poems are in Hindi. I assume that Tagore worked from a Bengali translation, but I do not know whose.
What Wants to Come Through Me Now
“I am here to sing songs for you in this great hall where I have a corner seat. “I have no work, other than at intervals to break out in a useless new song. “Comes the call to silent worship in the midnight temple, ask me, my master, to stand there before you and sing. “When the morning light is tuning its gold harp, command my presence to come into yours.”

The Guest House by Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi
Jalal al-Din Rumi was born on September 30, 1207 in Balkh (Afghanistan). His father Baha' Walad was descended from the first caliph Abu Bakr and was influenced by the ideas of Ahmad Ghazali, brother of the famous philosopher. Baha' Walad's sermons were published and still exist as Divine Sciences (Ma'arif). He fled the Mongols with his son in 1219, and it was reported that at Nishapur young Rumi met 'Attar, who gave him a copy of his Book of Mysteries (Asrar-nama).
Icelandic Folk Singers Break Into an Impromptu Performance of a 13th Century Hymn in a Train Station, and It's Delightful
Icelandic folk group Árstíðir know a good acoustic cathedral when they see one, even when it’s in a train station. In the above video, the sextet was returning from a concert in Wuppertal, Germany, when they were struck by the acoustic properties of this one section of the train terminal. Indeed, this was a fine place to stop and offer a special encore to their show, a performance of the early 13th century Icelandic hymn “Heyr himna smiður” (“Hear, Smith of Heavens”) by Kolbeinn Tumason.
The Mystical Poetry of Rumi Read By Tilda Swinton, Madonna, Robert Bly & Coleman Barks
Everyone’s favorite mystical poet, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī, probably could not have predicted how much global influence his work would have eight centuries after his death. Nor could he have appreciated the irony of his 13th century Islamic Persian verse making him the best-selling poet in the U.S. And yet, a huge part of Rumi’s appeal to the majority of his readers, religious and non-, comes from his non-traditionalism, his anti-dogmatism, gentle iconoclasm, and romanticism.
