Meet the Team Removing Tons of Plastic from Indonesia’s Coral Triangle
Bunaken, a crescent moon-shaped island in a remote corner of Sulawesi, Indonesia, sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse marine regions on the planet. Ocean trenches drop over 1,500 feet from its coral walls into the abyss, and the intertwining currents that surround it have made the island a haven for marine life that draws snorkelers and divers from around the world.
Video games as warm-up and non-procedural training tools for technical skills in healthcare: a systematic review
Introduction The transferability of skills from gaming to procedures such as endoscopy, laparoscopy, and others has been repeatedly demonstrated. Whether video games may be harnessed as interventions to enhance performance is the subject of multiple studies to date. This systematic review aims to analyse the evidence.

Ancient virus hunters: how we discovered sheeppox DNA hidden in medieval gospels
Humans and domesticated animals have lived together for millennia, and this relationship has shaped their destinies in countless ways. Animals offered people food, companionship, traction (pulling ploughs), clothing and transport. They also provided something less obvious but extraordinarily important: parchment to write on. This robust, plentiful and portable material enabled many people to record and store their histories in the days before mass-produced paper.
Medieval Manuscripts Reveal a 3,500-Year-Old Viral Secret Hidden in Parchment
Created in Northumbria in the eighth century, this copy of the Epistles of St Paul is among the oldest books held in the Trinity College Cambridge Library. Credit: Reproduced with kind permission of the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge Medieval parchment preserved two histories: the words written by scribes and the DNA of a sheep virus that had circulated for thousands of years.
Artificial mediators, protein carriers, and catalyst architecture in C1 bioconversion
Abstract Biological conversion of one-carbon (C1) feedstocks frequently requires coupling oxidative and reductive reactions through an appropriate electron-transfer pathway. The combination of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH), which oxidizes CO to CO2, and formate dehydrogenase (FDH), which reduces CO2 to formate, serves as a representative model for examining this requirement.
Manufacturing Paradigm III—From Conception to the Academic Frontier
The concept of “paradigm” was systematically articulated and popularized by the philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, published in 1962 [2]. In Kuhn’s view, scientific progress is not a linear accumulation, but a revolutionary leap achieved through paradigm shifts. A paradigm consists of the basic assumptions, theoretical frameworks, research methods, and value standards shared by a scientific community during a particular period.

Why Yemen has returned to conflict
The dormant conflict in Yemen has erupted once more, with the Houthi rebel group seizing control of the Red Sea port city of Mocha and a number of islands from Yemeni government forces in recent weeks. This has given the Houthis a foothold close to the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key trade gateway linking Asia and Europe. The advance of the Houthis has alarmed Yemen's northern neighbour, Saudi Arabia, for three main reasons.
Ocean Temperatures Break Records as El Niño Intensifies
The average temperature of the global sea surface broke record highs this summer, following decades of warming driven by human-induced climate change and intensified by a strong El Niño unfolding this year. The Copernicus Climate Change Service, part of the European Union’s climate monitoring program, recorded a global average sea surface temperature of 21.1°C on August 22, breaking the previous daily record set in March 2024.

Beyond trabeculation: from phenotype to prognosis in pediatric left ventricular noncompaction
Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous myocardial phenotype with highly variable clinical outcomes, making risk stratification a major challenge in pediatric cardiology. This commentary discusses the study by Jiang and colleagues, which identifies body surface area-adjusted left atrial diameter (LAD/BSA) and NT-proBNP as simple, independent predictors of cardiovascular mortality in children with LVNC.

“Clinical placement logbooks: how do they shape medical student learning behaviours?”
Background Clinical placement logbooks are widely used to guide learning, document clinical exposure, and support student–tutor feedback. Despite their ubiquity, little is known about how logbooks shape medical students’ learning behaviours, particularly the tension between their reflective and administrative functions. This study explores how students and tutors experience logbooks and how these experiences influence engagement during clinical placements.

Having a baby throws time management into chaos – here are five important lessons for new parents
Parents are told to treasure every moment: “It goes by in the blink of an eye!” Yet for many, the early months of parenthood do not feel fast so much as relentless : a blur of feedings, worries and appointments in which time seems to belong to everyone but the parents themselves. How do we find balance when every minute is already spoken for? This is the question at the heart of my research.

A War of Words: Framing the Austrian Civil War through the Language of the Combatants
The Austrian civil war is an event which is little spoken of in the larger history of civil wars – in part because it has often been subsumed into broader narratives of the collapse of the First Austrian Republic, the rise of Austrofascism or the approach of Anschluss. Indeed, there has long been debate over whether the events of February 1934 constituted a ‘civil war’ in an official sense.

Loreto Wins Reversal of Port Decision, but Whale Protections Remain at Stake
For over a decade, the community of Loreto, Baja California Sur, has championed a model of small-scale, sustainable ecotourism centered on the whales that gather each year in Loreto Bay National Park to feed and rear their young. This spring, that commitment was put to the test when a presidential decree threatened to expand cruise ship access to the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Deconstructing sex differences in emotion regulation: the underlying role of gender attitudes
Abstract Introduction: Although biological sex is frequently associated with distinct emotion regulation profiles, this dichotomy often overlooks the influence of sociocultural constructs. This study aimed to determine whether specific gender role attitudes predict the use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, and whether biological sex moderates these relationships.
Clinical and pathologic findings of splenic tumours in four horses: a case series

Why Iran broke the ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz and what might happen next – expert Q&A
The 60-day ceasefire signed by the US and Iran three weeks ago fell apart on July 8. Iran targeted vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz without its say-so, prompting the US to respond with strikes against a range of military targets in the Islamic Republic. President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire “over”, saying further talks would be a “waste of time”, and the two sides have subsequently exchanged further rounds of attacks.
