True sustainability is sustanimalism

The most common definition of sustainability is found in the Brundtland Report of 1987. Sustainability is described in this report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” It is a description that can be interpreted in various ways. So far, this has not been very favorable for animal welfare and a sustainable relationship between humans and animals.

Introduction In the past years, dietary supplement usage has been increasing globally (Menrad 2003; de Boer et al. 2018; Euromonitor International 2018). A study in six European countries found that 18.8% of consumers reported to use specifically herbal dietary supplements (Garcia-Alvarez et al. 2014). In the Netherlands, it is estimated that 10% of men and 17% of women use herbal dietary supplements (Jeurissen et al. 2018).
