Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, in fact, I own two. A few months back I found a vintage olive green Royal typewriter from the 1940s, and I absolutely love it.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

If there are two sides to every story and I've managed to piss off both sides in an attempt to be objective, I've done my job.

Who do you wish followed you?

Gianna Toboni from Vice or Michael Barbaro of the New York Times.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Texas Tribune or the Texas Observer. I really admire non-profit publications and their dedication to balanced news reporting.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That political coverage is just a mouthpiece for deceptive politicians. I see it as a watchdog on public officials.
