Building conservation impact: reflections from the Pacific
What struck me was not simply what people had achieved through a particular project or activity. It was what had happened since. One of these leaders had taken a vision developed through regional peer-to-peer learning exchanges and translated it into new procedures for effective protected and conserved area management in their country. Another had become a strong champion for youth engagement and was supporting youth networks.
National dialogue on OECMs launches in Sri Lanka
As a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Sri Lanka is committed to contribute towards achieving global target of increasing its terrestrial, freshwater, and marine protected and conserved area coverage to 30% of its territory by 2030 set by the Kuming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework Target 3.
New IUCN report sets out guidelines for best conserving rhinos in Africa
Conservation efforts have led to overall increases in the number of rhinos in Africa in recent years, but the continent’s rapidly growing human population – and the consequent loss of ecosystems – will require new and more inclusive approaches to protecting the iconic animals.
Boat journey across Lao PDR captures local efforts to save endangered species
After a stopover in the humming riverside town of Pakse in Southern Laos, a team from IUCN and CEPF embarked on the first leg of our trip along a largely unpaved climb to Khamtue village. We were greeted by the district governor, adorned in a muted green Xout Lao, traditional attire often worn for special occasions. He walked us through a clearing where a crowd of community members gathered.
Takeaways from Two North America Regional Conservation Forums
The Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) serves as the leading platform for knowledge and partnerships in the region and looks to evaluate conservation progress, revise priority objectives, and propose future action steps, bringingtogether key stakeholders and experts within the region every four-years. In 2024, the North America Regional Office (NARO) hosted two RCFs alongside National Committees and local partners.
Closing the Nature Financing Gap Through Water: Key Insights from the Webinar
How can nature’s role in climate mitigation help close the financing gap for nature? This was the central question of our recent webinar, delivered in collaboration with the Water Initiative for Net Zero (WINZ) and the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA).
Field Visit to An Phú: Unveiling Arsenic Contamination Levels
On 14 November 2024, IUCN visited An Phu District in An Giang Province to assess arsenic contamination in the Mekong Delta aquifer as a part of the “Enhancing the sustainability of the transboundary Cambodia-Mekong River Delta Aquifer” (CMDA) Project, funded by GEF with the execution and implementation of FAO and IUCN respectively. The team includes Robert Bower (Chief Technical Advisor), Le Van Minh (National Coordinator), and Dr. Ha Quang Khai (project advisor) and his six collaborators.

Ramsar Wetlands in Ecuador: Guardians of Water and Biodiversity on the Path to the Green List
Ecuador is home to 19 Ramsar wetlands that are internationally recognised for their ecological, social, and climatic importance. These ecosystems play a crucial role in water regulation, the conservation of key species, and the livelihoods of local communities. However, many of them face growing threats such as deforestation, pollution, and the expansion of human activities.

Bridging global and local efforts: IUCN’s upcoming support in Indonesia’s effective marine conservation through the Coral Bond initiative
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently participated in two pivotal events in Jakarta, Indonesia, further defining its role in providing support to advance marine conservation in the country. The Coral Bond Project Preparation Mission and the IUCN Green List Workshop underscored the synergy between global biodiversity frameworks and local conservation efforts, reflecting Indonesia’s commitment to achieving fair and effective management of marine protected areas (MPAs).
Why should we protect and recognise natural areas?
Protected and conserved areas are much more than simple green spaces. They are true jewels of nature, which harbour an incomparable biological and cultural richness. They are home to thousands of species, many of them unique and threatened. They are the livelihood of millions of people, who benefit from the services they provide, such as water, air and climate. And they are also a natural solution to face the climate crisis, as they capture and store large amounts of carbon.

59 sites in 16 countries By giving recognition to well-managed and well-governed protected and conserved areas, the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas aims to increase the number of natural areas delivering long-lasting conservation results for people and nature.
