Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, and I learned to type in elementary school on a device called a Type-Right.
How is social media changing news?
It's making journalism from other countries and citizen journalism more accessible for those inclined to seek it. But because of algorithms, it seems that many people are getting stuck in echo chambers and are less inclined to engage with perspectives they don't share. It also seems to prioritize emotional reactions over meticulous research.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Seeking the truth, wherever it leads. Always learning and informing the public. Being open to new perspectives and overlooked pasts.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Laptop, phone, camera, paper, pen, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Adobe Lightroom, Dropbox, social media and many more.
Who do you wish followed you?
Isabel Wilkerson. She's a class act, and I'd hold that opinion even if she hadn't won the Pulitzer Prize in journalism.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, but I helped with the yearbook. It was college where I fell into the newspaper world and realized how much I enjoyed it.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
There have been many that I've felt were extremely important to the community. One hopefully saved lives by warning about a deadly bacteria and another helped preserve a beloved natural area.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
You're going to confront the very best and the very worst of humanity, with regularity. You're going to have a unique perspective. Embrace it, and stay curious. Ask the hard questions. Learn all you can from veteran journalists.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
A heads-up on a local meeting with statewide officials that had the potential for very serious and far-reaching repercussions.
What's your favorite drink?
Water. I get a lot of eye rolls for that, but it's true.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Outside, ideally at the beach.
