Art in Tidal "Waves"
Calling all art lovers, this one’s for you! I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with two artists in Polk County who are hoping to make a “splash” on the art scene come November. Gillian Fazio and Katerina Santos have a festival in the works running from November 6 through November 14, 2026, that is sure to knock your socks off.
The Case for Space
If you had to choose, which would you pick: teaching an entire class of T. Rexes how to paint (reminder about the big heads and little arms) or participate in a figure drawing class of Lady Gaga in her meat suit, but you’re blindfolded, so you have to rely on touch and smell? For Sara Jones, Director of SPACE Art Collective, there is no choice. “T-Rex art class. Easy. Literally the same as teaching art to Kindergarteners, which I do on the regular.” Maybe one day T.
Rainbow Roots Festival
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, tell me, which is the fairest festival of them all? The very first Rainbow Roots Festival, of course! Projected to be chock full of performances, history, stories, tasty food, and vendors, this event is sure to fill your brain, belly, and tote bag with all sorts of wonderful treats and treasures.
On a Love Quest
Are you on a quest for great theater? Then look no further than “Love Quest” by Mary Maguire and Steve McGraw coming to Theatre Winter Haven from October 1 through the 26. “Love Quest” explores the reality of online dating: its prejudices, its foibles, the ubiquitous feeling of “AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH” as you send your profile out into the ether. From Theatre Winter Haven’s description, “Kate Crawford, 64, is recently divorced after a 30-year marriage.
Sandcastle Sazerac
For those who want to come out and support two local Smusicians with a string to pick, meet David Brimer and Marcus Brixa: the eponymous artists behind The Brimer & Brixa Duet. Though the two had often run within the same circles, the first time they played together was in 2023 at a serendipitous jam session at The Guitar Parlor in the Ghost Light Lounge at Theatre Winter Haven. It was harmony at first strum, as David says, “we realized we had very sympathetic, yet thoroughly opposed styles.
The Grand Smooch!
Most of us take for granted the privilege of being able to read. Did you know that an estimated 24% of adults living in Lakeland are functionally illiterate? That means nearly a quarter of the adults living in Polk County’s largest municipality can’t read above a 4th-grade English reading level. Roughly one in every four adults that you pass in the Swan City might not be able to read “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis in English.
We Will Rock You!
Polk County… it’s time to ROCK OUT!! This year’s Battle of the Bands High School Edition is coming to Union Hall with a lineup of musicians from Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Osceola, Orange, and, of course, good ol’ Polk County.
The Wonderful World of Watersports
My idea of a perfect morning would start with a cup of coffee as I watch the fog burn off the top of the lake. Eventually, the mist would clear, and water so perfectly flat that you can’t tell where the shore ends, and the water starts would greet me. That right there is true Ski Diva water. If I could trademark that phrase, I’d make millions just from my family members, who make fun of my aunt because she refuses to ski on anything less than perfect water.
Farm. Fresh. Fast.
“Mooo-ve over grocery stores, a new concept for convenient, local ingredients has arrived, fresh from the farm!” What do you get when you mix a love of local, farm fresh produce with a need for convenience? The Harvest Collective, that’s what! I caught up with Mikaela Booth, the owner and operator of Evelyn & Co. (a sustainable refillery based out of Lakeland) to learn more about her new business: The Harvest Collective.
Bricktacular Fun!
If you asked me which Florida theme park I would visit again and again (as a grown adult with a fully functioning prefrontal cortex) I would say… LEGOLAND! And that was even before I wrote this article.
Movies in Cars Under the Stars
You can debate the luxuries of 4-D, surround sound, IMAX experiences, and electronic reclining chairs till the credits appear, but born-and-raised Polk County residents will tell you the best place to see a movie in town has none of those.
