Jacky Hunt-Broersma Runs Because She's Alive
In 2022 Jacky Hunt-Broersma ran 104 marathons in 104 days to inspire others while setting a World Record at the time for most consecutive marathons – but she was also running to make peace with herself. You might know Jacky as an adaptive athlete, an amputee, but she only started running in 2017, 16 years after she lost part of her left leg at the age of 26 due to a rare form of cancer. “I still remember getting the diagnosis as if it was yesterday.

Mike McMonagle’s Return to The 'Beast Coast'
Best known to many trail runners by his Instagram handle @shitinthewoods, Mike McMonagle is a passionate and very skilled Utah based photographer whose pictures regularly feature professional and community runners. McMonagle had always enjoyed taking pictures, and around 2017 decided to invest more time behind the lens. He was not very inspired by his actual job, and photography gave him a way to provide something very meaningful to people he cared about.
Catching Up With Ellie Greenwood
Ellie Greenwoodâs name is followed by a long list of accolades; longtime course record holder at the Western States Endurance Run, 100-kilometer road World Champion, and the first British woman to win the famous Comrades Marathon. While some things have changed since she started ultrarunning in 2008 many things remain the same. Ellie still resides in North Vancouver, Canada and works full time as a running coach for Sharman Ultra, and works one day a week at a local independent running store.
2023 CCC Preview
Sometimes called the “little sister of UTMB” CCC (Courmayeur – Champex – Chamonix) is an epic race all its own with the competition to match. Starting from Courmayeur, Italy runners will climb over 20,000 feet on their way back to the finish line in the center of Chamonix. Clocking in at 101 kilometers, roughly 62 miles, runners must excel over what is often considered the faster ‘back half’ of UTMB if they want to land a spot on the podium.

Want to know more about Helen? Check out the Freetrail Podcast interview! Dylan sat down with the rising trail running star last week to learn more about her backstory and catch up after her most recent 50-kilometer wins. Passion and Drive with Canyon Woodward
30-year-old Canyon Woodward grew up and still lives in Franklin, North Carolina and while he is known by many as a gifted trail runner, he is also a passionate progressive political activist and a potter. Canyon and his siblings were connected to the outdoors at an early age and spent a lot of time traveling and exploring nature and other cultures. Their family made this happen by home-schooling and only partially attending high school to pursue athletics such as tennis and soccer.

The "Short" Trail Race Delivers
Day two of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships brought us a trail marathon unlike any other. The race was roughly 45 kilometers, 28 miles, with 3,194 meters of climbing, 10,479 feet. Spicy! The race started in Innsbruck and finished in the Stubai Valley and while it trended toward a net uphill course the runners were subjected to a grueling descent to the finish where they lost nearly 1,370 meters (4,500 feet) in under 6.5 kilometers (4 miles).
World Mountain and Trail Running World Championships 2023
Editor’s Note: The 2023 World Mountain and Trail Running World Championships (WMTRC) in Innsbruck-Stubai, Austria are just about to kick off. As you read this, the opening ceremonies are underway – and while the title of this ‘could be Olympics of trail’ is still a bit wordy, we are here to champion the crap out of the races and athletes participating this week.
What is Trail Culture?
Those who have followed Freetrail for a period of time will know that we gratuitously promote #TrailCulture on social media, on merch, and in everyday conversation. Though it’s become our tagline and the guiding philosophy of our business, weβve never explicitly defined what we mean by Trail Culture and what the specific attributes of Trail Culture are.
What Our Team Loved in April
If your April was anything like ours it was a blur – simultaneously a sprint and an ultra. We weathered the rain and mud with you outside of Portland, we traveled internationally (what time zone are we in now?) and somehow still made it to Auburn in time to talk about running while sweating it out like the racers on course.
Where Are the Women?
Women, running, and the eternal question, “How can we increase female participation in trail and ultra races?“ It’s UTMB 2021. I’m in a holding pen before the start and in the post-Covid era, I’m starting in the “slow” wave according to my ITRA ranking. A member of the organizing team talks over a microphone to the crowd to pass the time. As an engagement exercise, he asks all the men to sit down, and all the women to stand up so they can be recognized for taking part.
Escaping Traditions on Trails with Sunmaya Budha

L’Hirondel won the race in 11:40 with Budha crossing the line only five minutes behind her – both athletes well under the previous course record of 11:57 by Miao Yao.
Going For Gold: A Canyons Endurance Runs 100k Recap
All photos by Ryan Thrower Athletes in search of a final shot at a Golden Ticket for the Western States Endurance Run (WSER) in late June descended upon the “endurance capital of the world” Auburn, California this past weekend. It's About The People: Gorge Waterfalls Weekend
Words by Corrine Malcolm with images from Somer Kresiman. We could wax poetically about the blistering hot paces and incredible performances that were thrown down Gorge Waterfalls weekend – but we all know it was more wet than hot. And while the podium performances were top notch the success of the weekend is a lot less about that and a lot more about you all – the people, we couldn’t do it without you. So here is a little thanks for making it the best annual weekend of our lives.
Being Held to the Fire With John Kelly
37-year-old John Kelly loves a challenge, from long and unique endurance events to capturing big FKTs (Fastest Known Times), John is up to the task.
Tough Enough | Freetrail
My earliest memory of the notion of being tough, was my sophomore year of high school. I was in the backseat of the Burger’s truck as we drove to our first cross country ski meet of the season. With his usual frankness, my friend’s dad asked, “So are you guys ready for it to get hard out there?” …I’m 15 years old and just beginning to figure out this whole skiing as a sport thing. “Are you ready for it to hurt?” he asked. I wasn’t sure.
Introducing The Sub Hub
We are pleased to announce the newest addition to the Freetrail Podcast Network – The Sub Hub, hosted by EmKay Sullivan and Dani Moreno. As the name suggests the podcast will focus on all things sub-ultra in distance both domestically and abroad, and who better to host it than two women mixing it up with the best in the sport! While trail running at times feels more than a little ultra centric, we can not deny the growing interest in the shorter faster side of the trail community.
Going For Gold: A Black Canyon 100k Recap
The hunt for a berth into the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run (WSER) continued this past Saturday, as trail runners from across the globe migrated to the Black Canyon Ultras in Meyer, Arizona, now in its 10th running of the 100-kilometer race. Starting on the Meyer High School track, runners traveled southbound on the Black Canyon Trail on the point-to-point course towards the city of Anthem.
Why an Elite Development Team is Needed Now
Editor’s Note: When I sat down with Andy to talk about his new project, The Trail Team, it was clear he’s incredibly passionate about helping the next generation of trail athletes. He sees the pipelines functionality but also the missing puzzle pieces he hopes to help fill. If you are an up and coming sub-ultra trail athletes (age 20-30 years old) or know someone who is – I urge you to apply! Applications close Sunday February 5th.
Footprints + Freetrail: We’re Getting Hitched!
Trail runners spend a lot of time and energy moving through mountains and wild places. Being outside is a major part of what makes our sport so special, and this helps us develop intimate familiarity with the landscapes we run through. So it’s no coincidence that we’re often the first witnesses to changes in the environments we know best. As climate change progresses, a lot of people want to take action but don’t know how.
Going for Gold: a Bandera 100k Recap
We are a lucky bunch! In 2023 we are not only treated to a brand new livestream of race day, but also a recap by our own @aidstationfireball with images from Mike McMonagle. With the turning of the calendar, the pursuit of a berth into the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run (WSER) in Auburn continues with the HOKA Bandera Endurance Trail Race 100-kilometer.
Somer Kreisman the Habitual Runner
A self-proclaimed “habitual runner” Somer Kreisman‘s wide ranging interests and skills, to me, screams renaissance woman. A road runner who found her way to the trail, a physical therapist who found her way behind the camera, I have to wonder “What can’t Somer do?” Get to know a little bit more about the Freetrail fan and mountain goat in the following interview and video by Ryan Thrower.
Cast Your Ballots!
This is not so much a plea as it is a reminder – cast your ballots – voting closes at noon PST, today Tuesday, December 20th! Launching Trail Runner of The Year has been a major undertaking, but we felt it was mission critical to give our sport a global award recognizing the incredible professional athletes who give us goosebumps every weekend as they lay it on the line.
Finding Meaning in Community
We are back with another edition of the Athlete Journal, bringing back the athlete blogs of yore. In short snippets Rod has written about fear causing him to ‘deprioritize’ this running hobby of his – the same fear many of us face when we care a lot about the things we do, the big swings we take (and the victories or failures that come along with them). I asked him to expand on that here for you, and how finding belonging in his community has been grounding in that process.
Bigger Than a Run: Our Relationship With Running
Editorâs Note: This is the first in a three part series by our resident ultra-nerd, Keely Henninger, which will address the current state of mental and physical health, body image, and fueling in trail and ultrarunning community. Being sidelined by injury, while not fun, always allows me time to reflect on my own reasons for choosing to willingly train for and race ultramarathons. Trail running is invigorating, empowering and fills me with extreme happiness and accomplishment.
Ultra Trail Cape Town: a Bucket List Event
As I begin to reflect on a race weekend in Cape Town, South Africa one thing is clear – the changes, investment and effort the race organizers behind Ultra Trail Cape Town (UTCT) have put in have paid off in a better than ever 8th edition of the event. Those changes include new 55-kilometer, 23-kilometer, and 100-mile races that now round out the race weekend that features the previous marquee 100-kilometer race, and the existing 35-kilometer race.
Tuesday Trails: A Run Club to be Thankful For

From the Back of the Pack: Rini Sugianto Blends her Love of Trail Running with her Passion for Mountaineering
Editor’s Note: From the Back of the Pack is a new column by Freetrailer Cathy Beaudoin. The column will feature the incredible stories from runners in the trail and ultra community – runners who, even though they might not be gracing the top of the podium, never cease to inspire us with their grit, grace, and passion for the trail. Like many trail runners, Rini Sugianto’s heart is in the mountains, but it didn’t start out that way.
Making it: If at First You Don't Succeed
Editor’s Note: We are excited to bring you part one in the Making It series by aspiring professional runner Reid Burrows. The series will follow Reid through his ups and downs as he attempts to go all in after his dreams in the trail and ultra running world. We pickup his story last winter as he tried to make it state side in the hopes of training and competing alongside the best in the US.
Vote for Your Climate
My deadline for this article is looming and for the life of me, I cannot turn my passion and urgency into words. Instead, I fumble on my thoughts. I keep deleting, retyping, starting over, and stopping. I even considered skipping this assignment. And yet, I keep returning to the blank page, knowing that I must choose action over apathy. I decided to start this piece by telling a story about younger Danielle, not related to running. I was 19 years old, living in Rochester, NY.
Trail World Champions Ascend the Podium
Saturday at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships was a double feature with both the 80-kilometer (49 mile) and 40-kilometer (25 mile) races taking place over steep trails and under jungle canopy in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Turning first the shorter race of the day the athletes not only had the elements to face, the 40-kilometer race had 2,425 meters (8,000 feet) of climbing packed into it.
Uphill Champions Crowned
The World Mountain and Trail Running Championships kicked off Friday morning with the men’s and women’s uphill, or vertical, mountain race. The 8.5 kilometer (5.3 mile) race did not disappoint, with the best climbers in the world on the line – athletes erupted from the start corral and rapidly covered the initial flat kilometer quickly.
Opening Ceremonies With Team USA
The parade of nations is always an opportunity for the host nation to show off a little flair, and the festivities in Chiang Mai did not disappoint. Literal flare – or in this case, fireworks! Next Up is the Vertical Mountain Running race, an all uphill race that covers 5.3 miles with 3,494 feet of climbing (8.5-kilometers, 1065-meters).
Wednesday at World World Mountain and Trail Running Championships
Team USA athletes were on the move again Wednesday taking advantage of another chance to preview parts of the longer courses that they’ll race on Saturday in both the 40-kilometer Short Trail Championships and 80-kilometer Long Trail Championships. A handful of the team also ventured out into Chiang Mai for an evening cooking class to learn more about the local cuisine.
Airplane Conversations
Editors note: This is the first in a series of articles from Dakota Jones that will examine the intersection of environmentalism and the trail and ultrarunning community. Each piece will tell a story through personal reflection as Dakota highlights the progress and the mistakes he’s made along the way, including the incredible work that he is doing with Footprints Running – an incubator for climate action.
To Break a World Record: Be Poetry in Motion
On Saturday October 8th at seven in the morning under the cover of Karl the Fog the Ruth Anderson Memorial Endurance run kicked off around Lake Merced in San Francisco’s Sunset District. The race dates back to 1986 is named for ultrarunning pioneer Ruth Anderson who was known for breaking barriers and raced ultras late into her 70’s.
A Love Letter to Your Backyard
“Sometimes we don’t realize what we have on our own doorstep.” I’d caught Paddy O’Leary outside of the lab, where the professional runner spends his working hours as a researcher, to talk to him about the short film Urban Oasis ahead of its local premiere. The four minute film is a love letter to a place both Paddy and the films director, Ryan Scura, had made home – San Francisco. A 7 by 7 square of land that I also called home for the past four years.
The Middle Passage in Trail Running
The inaugural Mammoth Trail Festival was this past weekend, and if you didn’t get to be there in person let me tell you – it was more than just a running race! Clinics, group runs, live podcasts, film showings, and talks highlighted each day including a discussion led by Psychotherapist Michael J. Loeffler called “How Your Story Shapes You”.
Learning to Slow Down to Speed Up
Welcome to our first of many Athlete Journals! As media consumption pivots to the quick hits of Instagram posts and TikToks, long gone are the blogs that likely brought you into the sport. One of my hopes is to recreate that spark in the form of essays from your favorite pros as they navigate the highs and lows of running, racing, and life. To kick us off, one of our own, Katie Asmuth. “Slow down, you move too fast” the Simon and Garfunkel hymn humming on my lips.
Letter From the Editor
Trail Fam! I’m Corrine Malcolm, Freetrail’s new Editor-in-Chief. While my voice will still be piped into your headphones as the co-host of the Trail Society podcast (and whenever Dylan hands me a mic) you’ll find me here operating both behind the scenes and in written words. My goal, to provide you with consistent trail tales from every corner of our sport. In many ways this feels like my 100-mile debut… standing on the start line, eager, readying myself to leap with both feet into the unknown.

Fact or Fiction: Deodorant, Downhill Quads Seasoning, and Slushies
Welcome to another edition of Running on Science’s Fact or Fiction, the occasional myth-busting version of our column. This round, we take a look at three more intriguing topics that you may have heard on the trail. Will deodorant impair your sweating? Will one good downhill session bulletproof your quadriceps? While slushies for dessert are delicious, are ice slurries bad in competition?
