What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a part-time sportswriter.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I had one as a teen that I loved very much. It's somewhere around here still ...

What does it mean to be a journalist?

I still love telling stories. Without us, they'd be forgotten.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook.

Why did you become a journalist?

Growing up, I wanted to be a professional writer, and journalism was the only opportunity in my small town to make it happen.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did work for my high school newspaper my senior year. I was a columnist/critic.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm very proud of my three-part series on Rajneeshpuram written after the airing of the "Wild Wild Country" documentary.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Listen to everyone and no one. Find a mentor.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

What's your favorite drink?

These days: orange juice.

The Atlantic Monthly.
