Review – Flight Risk - Geeks Under Grace
Mel Gibson’s career is fascinating and controversial (for reasons it doesn’t take much Googling to figure out). From his famous acting career in Mad Max, Gallipolli, Hamlet, Lethal Weapon, and The Patriot, through his lukewarm directorial debut of Man Without a Face, he has developed a unique voice as a director of epic films.
Review — Thomas Jefferson: A Biography of Spirit and Flesh - Geeks Under Grace
Happy President’s Day! Since 1879, it has been an American tradition to celebrate all 45 men who have served as president (on the date of George Washington’s birthday) as a federal holiday. Unfortunately, this year’s President’s Day is certainly coming amid difficult times, as a difficult election year, partisan squabbling, global wars, and anger continue to boil over on the international stage.
Review – American Fiction - Geeks Under Grace
There has been a movement in recent Black cinema to explore the complicated intersection between the Black experience and the intentions of White Liberals, who fancy themselves the greatest cheerleaders of civil rights and justice. The most notable of these films was Jordan Peele’s Get Out, which explored the tense realities of how performative progressivism hides dark motivations; including the desire to consume Black bodies and experiences while marginalizing actual Black people.
Review – The Holdovers - Geeks Under Grace
The holiday season is here and with it comes a cavalcade of prestige dramas and holiday films, although they are rarely the same movie.
Review – Anatomy of a Fall - Geeks Under Grace
The fall movie season is already starting to pick up with limited-release movies, prestige dramas, and foreign films beginning to make their appearances in theaters and on streaming. Among the more talked about films of late—which have included The Holdovers, Maestro, May December, Poor Things, and American Fiction—is a French crime thriller that has piqued the interest of the few cinephiles who have had the opportunity to see it yet. Violence/Scary Images: A bloody dead body is discovered.
Review – A Haunting in Venice - Geeks Under Grace
I love the fact that Hollywood is allowing a major franchise to exist based on the whodunnit novels of Agatha Christie. In our age of endless sequels and franchise fatigue, it is lovely to see Hollywood use its powers for not-evil for once and let one of our greatest living directors spin yarns around one of the most beloved authors of the 20th century. Kenneth Branagh is arguably neither the first nor best actor to have ever played the great detective, Hercule Poirot.
Review - Oppenheimer
The life of J. Robert Oppenheimer is a curious but fascinating muse for the next project of director Christopher Nolan. Given his prior success in Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy, he continues to enjoy one of the most impressive blank checks in Hollywood history, with a nearly endless series of opportunities to tell whatever story he wants, including Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and now Oppenheimer.
Review – The Mandalorian: Season 3 - Geeks Under Grace
After a long two-year wait, The Mandalorian finally returned this spring, with the character having briefly appeared in three episodes of the critically reviled Book of Boba Fett. Disney+’s Star Wars efforts have widely begun to be met with audience antipathy, with the general public’s fascination with “Baby Yoda” seemingly decreasing and the quality of shows not meeting the expectations of fans. The only critically acclaimed project, Andor, was seemingly completely ignored by audiences.
Review – John Wick: Chapter 4 - Geeks Under Grace
After a four-year wait and multiple delays related to schedule conflicts and the pandemic, the John Wick franchise is finally back with its fourth film. In the nearly eight and a half years since John Wick premiered in late 2014, the scrappy first film has grown into Hollywood royalty with cameos from almost every great action star and character actor in contemporary cinema. Now it all leads up to this, with director Chad Stahelski bringing the story arc of his four films to a momentary close.
Review – The Fabelmans - Geeks Under Grace
Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors who ever lived. Since his debut with Duel (1971), he has directed thirty-two films and many of them are masterpieces of storytelling, like Schindler’s List and The Color Purple. He is also one of the greatest blockbuster directors of all time, but following his adaptation of Ready Player One he’s mostly moved away from action movies.
Review - Tár - Geeks Under Grace
Life has really made it hard for me to be a movie person of late. I’ve maybe seen one movie in theaters since August and I am ready to get back to my grind.
Review - Misinterpreting Genesis
As someone who grew up in a Fundamentalist Baptist family, I must admit that one of the most bizarre experiences of my life was when I went to visit the infamous Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, two summers ago. The massive facility, and its twin facility The Noah’s Ark Encounter with its life-sized creation of the Biblical Ark, was certainly fascinating to experience in real life after years of hearing stories about its reputation.
Victorian Scribblers on Apple Podcasts
78 episodes Victorian Scribblers is a podcast about the nineteenth-century writers time forgot, from Mary Elizabeth Braddon (the mother of detective fiction) to Marie Corelli (queer science-fiction writer extraordinaire) and beyond. Hosted by Dr. Courtney Floyd, a specialist in nineteenth-century literature and print culture, and Dr. Eleanor Dumbill, a specialist in Victorian literature and publishing.
Review – Cry Macho - Geeks Under Grace
Clint Eastwood has been one of the most important actors and directors in Hollywood since the 1960s. He started acting at the height of the Hollywood studio system, helped spark the spaghetti western genre, became the 1970’s most beloved anti-hero action star, and proceeded to build a seventy-year career in filmmaking that continues well into his 90s. In recent years, his belligerent anti-political correctness statements have somewhat alienated him from audiences.
