Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
My first published work was for EastLife Stories, a project led by the University of East London focusing on the real people of East London.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Never, though one day I guess I would like to own one for the novelty.
How is social media changing news?
Social media has made the news more competitive. We need to grab readers' attention in fewer words.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Morbo the Annihilator from Futurama.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Via email is the best. The pitch should explain the audience, purpose, and topic.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Word, Google Docs, SEO tools, Grammarly, HARO, WordPress, Yoast, Celtx, Confluence.
What's your favorite social network?
LinkedIn. I do have Twitter, but I mostly use it for research.
Who do you wish followed you?
Adam Curtis—my favorite documentary maker.
Why did you become a journalist?
It was a way to utilize my writing skills while I worked on my screenwriting projects, but over time it has become more fulfilling.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
In high school, I was more interested in becoming a film director than a writer, so instead, I joined school drama productions.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My article about Marmite—I think I may have written one of the most comprehensive articles on the internet about the gluey black magic.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Keep digging deeper. You can sometimes be amazed at what you might find if you keep asking 'why?'
When's the best time to pitch you?
Before 12 PM EET, though I might not get back to you until the afternoon or evening depending on how busy I am.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Writing for Home Cook World has been highly enjoyable. From the get-go, I had a high level of freedom to try out new things.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I can't say for sure, but when I receive messy or confusing pitches, it can be a turnoff.
What's your favorite drink?
I love a strong coffee in the morning and a cold beer in the evening.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Spending time with my family. We like to travel a lot. I also greatly enjoy hiking.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Onion.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That I'm a cryptocurrency fanboy—in actuality, there are many pros and cons to crypto, and some of the crypto scene I find highly toxic.
