On the Shelf: The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder: A Novel
Reviewed by Craig Carlson “The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder: A Novel” by C. L. Miller, Atria Books, 2024, $27.99. Just in case the reader was confused, the title of this mystery includes the phrase “a novel.” I like that. I suppose one might pick up this book thinking they will be getting tips about murder or antiquing. But I read it for the English manor setting, snooping into other people’s business and plot twists. The characters also drink a lot of tea which is fine with me.
University of Florida researchers look to extend artichoke shelf life
The University of Florida reports that researchers are seeking to enhance artichoke preservation through advanced breeding. Currently, artichokes can last about two days at 62 degrees or about a week in the refrigerator, the university said. “This limitation not only affects how well we can market artichokes, it’s why we want to explore innovative preservation techniques,” project researcher Tie Liu, researcher on the project, said in the report.

How the apple industry is navigating the rising cost of business
It’s no secret the cost of food is a major talking point among consumers. But what do those outside the produce industry know and understand about the cost of production? In a recent LinkedIn post, Jim Bair, president and CEO of the U.S. Apple Association, attempted to do just that by reaching more than 11,000 people. “Since 2020, the cost to buy apples is up 13%, but the cost to grow apples is up 30%,” he said. “Fuel is some of that [cost] for freight of chemicals.

Will indoor growing transform agriculture?
Indoor growing or controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is a method using either vertical or hydroponic technology to create a controlled environment for growing plants. The growth of the CEA industry has been driven by predictions that we will need 20% more land to feed the planet using current farming practices. CEA is being supported by investments from industry leaders like Walmart, Driscoll’s, T&A, Taylor Farms and many others. Let’s review the value equation for the CEA business model.

E-commerce opportunities for fresh produce
COVID-19 has lead to significant supply chain disruptions in 2020, causing many in the produce industry to ask “How can I strengthen my company for the future?” There are numerous supply chain predictions, but the one that stands out the most is the prediction that e-commerce and direct-to-consumer food sales will continue to skyrocket in 2021 and beyond.

This includes issuing a new Strategy for the Safety of Imported Food and requesting new funding from Congress to support our efforts.” The FDA outlined how they will “continue to focus on shifting our work upholding food safety from response to prevention.
The art of the deal evolves
( Photo courtesy Craig Carlson ) People often ask me what business practices I would reintroduce to the modern produce industry. Put simply, I would bring back the “art of the deal.” In the world of automated systems buyers are losing the art and science of buying and this needs to be brought back, as it is something automated systems cannot understand. In order to better understand this, we must first understand retailer-buying practices today with those of the past.

On Sept. 17 Amazon Go opened its first location in Chicago. It’s a 2,000-square-foot convenience store designed around a cashierless shopping experience. This Chicago store is the fourth location and its first outside of the Seattle area. Amazon has considerable plans for this concept, aiming to open up to 3,000 of these tech-forward stores by 2021. In order to shop in the store, customers are required to download the Amazon Go app on their smartphone and link it to their Amazon payment account.
Ready for the online marketplace?
As we look back on the one-year anniversary of the Amazon-Whole Foods merger, we reflect upon how the grocery industry was changed forever. Following the announcement of the merger, grocery chains’ stocks plunged and overnight the grocery industry was awakened to the online threat of Amazon! A stunned grocery industry immediately went about subcontracting home delivery to Instacart and other third-party vendors, as well as developing click-and-collect shopping options.
