Yes, It’s OK to Wave at the End of a Zoom Call
For all the ways we communicate, there are different ways to greet people, and different ways to say goodbye. These social norms evolve over time. By now we’re comfortable saying “bye” to someone at the end of a phone call. But newer technologies can still leave us feeling awkward at the transition. For example, video calls. The farewell question really comes down to one issue: Am I a dork for waving goodbye? Because, really, why do we wave?
OMG! It’s Terry Gross
I Spot a Local Celebrity Photo by Matt Botsford on Unsplash I became a “Fresh Air” addict many years ago, when I was living in Maine. At that time, the Bangor NPR station aired the Philadelphia-based show just once a week. I was hooked the first time I tuned in. Every other woman radio host I’d ever heard was a warm, engaging, people-pleaser. But Terry? She had this sharp, matter-of-fact “I’m the smartest person in the room and I don’t care who knows it” vibe that made me an instant fan.
I Have to Forgive You
I Have No Choice Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash I work behind the circulation desk at a small suburban library. While most of our patrons are lovely, considerate people. some of them are anything but. While attempting to help the public, I’ve been yelled at, cursed at and called every rude name in the book.
Do the One Thing That Gives You a Reason to Get Up Every Day
It’s that thing you do! Photo by Krzysztof Maksimiuk on Unsplash Do you know what your thing is? No, I’m not talking about a body-part or a character from The Addams Family; I’m referring to that thing you do, which is part of your personality and daily life and gives you purpose. There’s a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire surrounding the emergency vet’s office, and sloping upward from the fence is a small hill that ends at the highway.
My Four Most Popular Medium Stories of 2020
And What Their Success Has Taught Me About Writing on Medium Photo by Erwan Hesry on Unsplash As 2020 draws to a close, I decided to take a look back at my most popular stories this year. The metric I decided to use was Reads. Here’s why: I quickly realized that four of my stories did far better than anything else I’d written on the platform in 2020. While my best Medium stories can reach hundreds of readers, these four were read by thousands! What, if anything, did these stories have in common?
The Joy of Record Stores
I miss that feeling of spending hours searching through the stacks. Photo by Jamakassi on Unsplash I’m not someone who thinks that everything was better in the past or who lives more in their memories than in their present. I depend on things such as computers, the internet, and streaming television that I wouldn’t want to live without them. MP3s and music apps aren’t better than LPs, CDs, and record stores. Tower Records is back.
