Don't believe the hype: Democrats are in lockstep for November | Opinion Original
Curtis Hertel Op-ed contributor Aug. 7, 2026, 11:00 a.m. ET As the general election officially kicks off, Michigan Democrats are laser-focused on a single mission: Winning in November. And Abdul El-Sayed is the candidate who will get it done. Michiganders rejected Mike Rogers 2024 because of his record of spinning through the revolving door to enrich himself at our expense.
MI Dem chair: GOP wants us divided, but our convention unified | Opinion
This past Sunday, more than 7,250 Democrats gathered in Detroit for the Michigan Democratic Party’s 2026 Endorsement Convention. It was the largest convention our state party has ever hosted, with record turnout and palpable enthusiasm. On Saturday night, we also hosted our 2026 Legacy Dinner honoring Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which was the party’s most-successful fundraising event in history. There’s lots to be proud of from this weekend, as well as challenges and lessons to be learned.

Viewpoint: Abortion rights should transcend party politics
Monday marks two years since the Supreme Court released the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and a constitutional right to abortion. As a father of four, it sickens me that my children are growing up with fewer rights than their parents and grandparents. That’s not how it’s supposed to be. Many of us remember when the Dobbs news broke. First the draft decision leaked. It was hard to believe. Then a few weeks later, the opinion came out. It was a terrifying reality.
Opinion: Instead of statewide income tax cuts, let's help working families and retirees
As public servants, voters sent us to Lansing to get things done. They trust us to set Michigan up for success in the long term, treating taxpayer resources and our budget responsibly. Unfortunately, the tax plan passed by the Legislature last week would set Michigan up for failure. It is fiscally irresponsible and could make costs go up when we need them to go down.
Column: It’s never been more important to fix Michigan’s broken unemployment system
We are in unprecedented times. The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has disrupted the lives of Michigan’s hardworking families and small business owners like nothing we’ve seen in our lifetimes. Millions of men and women who have lost their jobs, through no fault of their own, are relying on unemployment to hang on and weather this storm while our economy slowly regains its footing.
Curtis Hertel: Virginia’s governor refuses to kill Right to Work. But governing from the ‘mushy middle’ doesn’t work.
Right to Work protest at the Michigan Capitol, December 2012 | Susan J. Demas As we turn the calendar to 2020, I am excited for the opportunities we have in the new year. In 2020, we have an incredibly important election for the future of the Democratic Party and our nation. But we must keep in mind that with great power comes great responsibility.
Opinion: Don't blame Michigan's broken roads on fair wages
OPINION Curtis Hertel Published 10:57 p.m. ET Aug. 17, 2019 Macomb County officials said work has started to repair sinkhole that appeared on Mound Road near Interstate 696 in Warren. (Photo: Macomb County Public Works Office) A good sign that someone doesn’t have a solution for a problem is when they start misdirecting blame for the problem’s existence, often resorting to scare tactics and scapegoating.
