What Would an Equitable, Consenting Reopening Look Like?
On May 2, B.C. unveiled its ambitious four-step, four-month-long restart plan. Not long after, there came an avalanche of personl and professional pressure on me and the artists I work with to be back to 100 per cent in-person work as early as July. I’ve started to receive notices that the online options offered in arts, performance and fitness, as well as curbside and delivery options for businesses established during the pandemic, will be phased out as early as this month.
Cynara Geissler, Layla Cameron, Katrina Molson, Calla Evans: BMI modifier for surgeons nothing more than a ‘fat tax’
Dr. Kathleen Ross, president of Doctors of B.C. Custom Photography / PNG While the introduction of a “BMI modifier” for surgeons seemingly does not create any additional costs for taxpayers, there are costs for fat people. Public health researchers have argued that providing health care using a weight-based paradigm violates the human rights of patients. Under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, all people are entitled to the right to health.

The article I’m reading lists multiple causes of grief, but the major betrayal of my body is missing from the list: infertility. It doesn’t get talked about very much, though it affects more than 10 percent of couples. It’s rarely mentioned in church. It’s taboo on Mother’s Day. Even Hallmark doesn’t profit from it. Or listened to an expecting friend talk enthusiastically about how fun it is to shop for baby clothes—the prints! The colors! The animal-hooded onesies that are basically the comfy Halloween costumes of your dreams!—and wished that you could have that much fun with clothes?

Two BFF Capybaras Escaped From A Zoo, And We Know Why
On Tuesday, May 24, two young, unnamed female* capybaras escaped what was to be their new home in Toronto’s High Park Zoo. When zoo staff attempted to introduce them to their enclosure—and their intended husbeast, an adult male capybara named “Chewy”—the ROUSes opted instead to swipe left and make a run for it.
