What was your first job as a journalist?
My first full-time job was fact-checking for People in New York. 18 years later, I left the company as an assistant editor.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I played with one as a kid and submitted homework using one until I got a Smith Corona word processor in 1988!
How is social media changing news?
The quick retweeting, sharing, and linking to news via social media makes it harder for readers to discern accurate and original sources.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Sundra Peale in the Nexus comic series.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means being trusted to share one person's story to another, to be an accurate witness and to inform and/or inspire readers.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Via email with details and a time peg.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Pen, back-up pencil, notepad, Olympus digital recorder.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook is my favorite social network but Twitter is how I toggle between personal and professional realms.

Why did you become a journalist?
I can't sing, act or play a sport, but I can write about those who do. That's why I became a journalist.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I ended up the managing editor for The Griffin at Dulaney High School in Timonium, Md. I also drew 'emergency graphics.'
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Jamie Sale and David Pelletier receiving a second gold medal in the pairs event at the Salt Lake Olympics during its judging controversy.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Build your network of contacts and follow through with more interviews, research and fact-checking. You will stand out from your peers.
