The Rachel Incident
Updating the romantic comedy --- a genre in which wit surpasses sentiment --- is an enterprise Jane Austen herself might have admired. Not that THE RACHEL INCIDENT is one of those Austen retellings (thank goodness). It is an original: madly clever, understatedly charming, and, though Irish, blessedly free of blarney.
Review: Pig out on 'The Rachel Incident,' a comic novel about misguided friends
I didn't just read Caroline O'Donoghue's latest novel, "The Rachel Incident." I pigged out on it. I half-expected to see words smeared on my face or crumbled down my shirt and all over my lap when I looked up from the last page, to be followed by the welling shame of having gorged on nothing but empty calories.

Book World: An Irish woman looks back, with plenty of humor and heartbreak
- - - If I'd been paying better attention or still had kids at home, I might have heard about the Irish writer Caroline O'Donoghue earlier.
The Rachel Incident
1 I only ever really talk about Dr. Byrne with James Devlin, and so I always assumed that, were he to ever come back into my life, it would be through him. I was wrong. He came via the Toy Show. The Late Late Toy Show is an annual Irish TV event whereby small children review the years best toys and advise other children what to put on their Santa lists. Its a big deal if you're a child in Ireland, and a bigger deal if you're an Irish adult who lives abroad. Its a hard thing to explain to outsiders.

Hey there, Happy official spring! I've seen several memes floating around the internet around the theme of "I thought my life was in shambles, and then winter ended" and those have resonated a lot. The first signs of spring have brought a bounce to my step, a renewed sense of motivation, and joy. March was busy and lovely. We spent a few days in Florida, visiting Dean's parents at the start of the month.

The Rachel Incident
Review by Jenni O, Reviewer Last updated on 09 Feb 2023 I loved this book and it was one of those stories I couldn’t wait to pick up again whenever I had space in my life. Told in the intimate first-person voice of Rachel, a twenty-year-old Irish university student, it has that feel of Sally Rooney’s ‘Normal People’ crossed with the always funny Bridget Jones. It is a coming-of-age story that every one from 18 to 80+ might well enjoy.

the best new picture books and novels
This month's picture books range from the comic to the meditative. Swapna Haddow and Dapo Adeola's My Dad Is a Grizzly Bear (Macmillan) is a feast of sly visual jokes and loving fun poked at a hulking, hairy, silhouetted father, with bouncy interwoven repetition that makes it huge fun to read aloud. Grandad's Camper (Andersen) by Harry Woodgate, meanwhile, is a colour-flooded riot of memory. Grandad used to go everywhere with his husband in their beloved vintage camper van.

A love letter to the romance heroes and heroines of YA by Caroline O'Donoghue
This post was written by Caroline O’Donoghue, author of All Our Hidden Gifts It’s difficult to imagine a YA book without a romance in it. I mean, sure. They happen. But while this might make me an utterly basic reader, a YA fantasy without a good romantic subplot is kind of like eating a white pizza. I’m sure there’s a market for it, and I’m sure it’s well made. But it’s not for me. Give me the sweet acidic pop of tomato sauce under all that cheese and sausage. Give me love and make it messy.

What Sex and the City taught me about the joy of fandom
We are four months into 2021, and the most significant thing I have done in the first quarter of this hopeful year is talk about Sex and the City. Every week for the last two months, I’ve booted up a Zoom call with my friend Dolly Alderton, opened a bottle of something, and then spent three hours talking about a show that is 20 years old. The result is Sentimental in the City, a podcast mini series where we talk about each season of Sex and the City for ‘the Great American Novel it truly is’.
All Our Hidden Gifts by Caroline O'Donoghue
Maeve Chambers doesn't have much going for her. Not only does she feel like the sole idiot in a family of geniuses, she managed to drive away her best friend Lily a year ago. But when she finds a pack of dusty old tarot cards at school, and begins to give scarily accurate readings to the girls in her class, she realizes she's found her gift at last. Things are looking up - until she discovers a strange card in the deck that definitely shouldn't be there.
A love letter to the conservatory, a useless hangover from our wildest suburban dreams
Recently, I found myself reading about conservatories. Not musical conservatories—far be it from me to guess at what the New York Philharmonic gets up to. No, I mean the other kind of conservatory: the big glass rooms that suburban families spent the 1990s attaching to their homes, then occasionally using between the months of April and May—after that, it’s too hot—and September and October—after that, it’s too cold.
