Climate, Variability, and Climate Sensitivity of “Middle Atmosphere” Chemistry Configurations of the Community Earth System Model Version 2, Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Version 6 (CESM2(WACCM6))
1 Introduction Whole atmosphere climate models resolve the interactions between atmospheric dynamics, chemistry, aerosols, and upper atmosphere physics, and are needed to study a wide range of scientific problems. This includes: stratospheric ozone loss (Solomon, 1999; Solomon et al., 1986), its recovery (Fang et al., 2019), and the potential limits of recovery due to future aircraft (J.
A Method for Estimating Global Subgrid‐Scale Orographic Gravity‐Wave Temperature Perturbations in Chemistry‐Climate Models
1 Introduction A number of chemical processes in the atmosphere are non-linearly dependent on the temperature. For instance, chemical reactions often depend exponentially on the temperature (Burkholder et al., 2015), and the formation of stratospheric aerosols is linked to temperature thresholds (Carslaw et al., 1994; Eckermann et al., 2006; Hanson & Mauersberger, 1988; Marti & Mauersberger, 1993; Solomon et al., 2015).
Significant weakening of Brewer-Dobson circulation trends over the 21st century as a consequence of the Montreal Protocol
It is well established that increasing greenhouse gases, notably CO , will cause an acceleration of the stratospheric Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC) by the end of this century. We here present compelling new evidence that ozone depleting substances are also key drivers of BDC trends.
Variability of Stratospheric Reactive Nitrogen and Ozone Related to the QBO
The stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) dominates interannual variability of dynamical variables and trace constituents in the tropical stratosphere, and provides a natural experiment to test circulation-chemistry interactions. This work quantifies the relationships among ozone (O ), reactive nitrogen (NO ) and source gas N O, and their links to the QBO, based on satellite constituent measurements and meteorological data spanning 2005-2014 (over four QBO cycles).
The viability of trajectory analysis for diagnosing dynamical and chemical influences on ozone concentrations in the UTLS
To evaluate the utility of trajectory analysis in the tropical upper-troposphere/lower-stratosphere (UTLS), Lagrangian predictions of ozone mixing ratio are compared to observations from the Airborne Tropical TRopopause EXperiment (ATTREX). Model predictions are based on backward trajectories that are initiated along flight tracks.
Revisiting Southern Hemisphere Polar Stratospheric Temperature Trends in WACCM: The Role of Dynamical Forcing
The latest version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM), which includes a new chemistry scheme and an updated parameterization of gravity waves, produces temperature trends in the Antarctic lower stratosphere in excellent agreement with radiosonde observations for 1969-1998 as regards magnitude, location, timing and persistence.
