Unrecognized volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds from brake wear
Unrecognized volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds from brake wear† Motor vehicles are among the major sources of pollutants and greenhouse gases in urban areas and a transition to “zero emission vehicles” is underway worldwide. However, emissions associated with brake and tire wear will remain. We show here that previously unrecognized volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, which have a similarity to biomass burning emissions are emitted during braking.

Modeling C1-C4 alkyl nitrate photochemistry and their impacts on O3 production in urban and suburban environments of Hong Kong
As intermediate products of photochemical reactions, alkyl nitrates (RONO ) regulate ozone (O ) formation. In this study, a photochemical box model (PBM) incorporating master chemical mechanism (MCM) well reproduced the observed RONO at an urban and a mountainous site, with index of agreement (IOA) in the range of 0.66-0.73. 0.0003 was identified to be the most appropriate branching ratio for C RONO , with the error less than 50%.
Contrasting aerosol refractive index and hygroscopicity in the inflow and outflow of deep convective storms: Analysis of airborne data from DC3
We examine three case studies during the Deep Convective Clouds and Chemistry (DC3) field experiment when storm inflow and outflow air were sampled for aerosol sub-saturated hygroscopicity and the real part of refractive index (n) with a Differential Aerosol Sizing and Hygroscopicity Probe (DASH-SP) on the NASA DC-8. Relative to inflow aerosol particles, outflow particles were more hygroscopic (by 0.03 based on the estimated ? parameter) in one of the three storms examined.
Revisiting global fossil fuel and biofuel emissions of ethane
Recent measurements over the Northern Hemisphere indicate that the long-term decline in the atmospheric burden of ethane (C H ) has ended, and the abundance increased dramatically between 2010 and 2014. The rise in C H atmospheric abundances has been attributed to oil and natural gas extraction in North America. Existing global C H emission inventories are based on outdated activity maps that do not account for current oil and natural gas exploitation regions.
