Changing access to ice, land and water in Arctic communities
Abstract Arctic climate change has the potential to affect access to semi-permanent trails on land, water and sea ice, which are the main forms of transport for communities in many circumpolar regions. Focusing on Inuit Nunangat (the Inuit homeland in northern Canada), trail access models were developed drawing upon a participatory process that connects Indigenous knowledge and science.

TROUTDALE – It’s a tradition with roots that reach a long, long way back in history. From its origins in the Middle East, no later than 500 CE, the craft of knitting yarn with two or more needles into knotted fabric traveled into Spain and Portugal, and then spread northward into the rest of Europe. By the 1400’s, knitted goods for everyday use were common. Probably not much later, people were using hand knitting and knitted items for charitable purposes.

VOLNEY – These days, even during the “slow time” on a weekday afternoon between the lunch and supper crowds, the restaurant located at the intersection of US 58 and VA 16 in Volney is busy. The establishment, freshly named the Corner Store and Cafe, has recently undergone a change of ownership, a re-model and facelift, a shift in focus, and a dedication to certain policies that have made it a mecca for folks in the surrounding communities.
Bid For A Cure auction set for March 17
INDEPENDENCE — The 17th annual Bid for a Cure charity auction will be held on March 17 in the Grayson County High School auditorium in Independence. For more than 20 years, the local Bid for a Cure event has raised funds to help researchers and doctors as they develop more and better treatments and gain ground in their race for a cure for cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition that can impede breathing and normal physical growth.

INDEPENDENCE – Candice Stevenson describes herself as “a beginning farmer.” She and her husband, Ian, have purchased 47 acres in the Elk Creek community, and they’re trying to forge a life not only from the acreage and the crops and animals it can produce, but also from the knowledge and skills they brought with them when they came here to homestead. Those skills include physical therapy (for Ian), and marketing and videography (for Candice).

TROUTDALE – On a cold December Saturday morning, travelers passing the old Flatridge School near Troutdale might be surprised to see smoke coming from the main building’s chimney. Another surprise would be the line of cars parked behind the school, near the metal building that housed the school’s gym. And most unexpected of all might be the big box truck backed up to the sidewalk near the gym’s wide-open doors, and the men who are quickly unloading some heavy equipment from the truck.

MOUTH OF WILSON – In the rural high country of western Grayson County, the earth trembles under the wheels of farm vehicles pulling loads of produce out of the fields, to one of several loading areas. From there, “big rigs” are hauling load after load of seasonal stuff to markets. It started in October, when huge cardboard boxes of pumpkins rumbled towards town.

City council votes on vehicle-related issues
By D.T. CLARK, Staff Issues of vehicles and where to put them held the attention of Galax City Council members at their regular monthly meeting on Nov. 13. Once again addressing an on-going issue, council voted unanimously to make some changes to the city’s parking and traffic ordinance. The changes give authority to the city manager to, with council’s confirmation, set the amount of parking fines and establish a method of informing drivers or vehicle owners of parking violations.
Galax will create recycling station
The City of Galax will soon have its own convenience station for residents to recycle cardboard, plastics, newspaper and aluminum. Galax City Council voted during its Nov. 13 meeting to have a site prepared on Fair Street, beside the public works department and across from the regional animal shelter. City Manager Keith Barker pointed out that this site is accessible and already has a concrete pad, which would significantly reduce the expense of setting up the station.
City moves personal property tax deadline to Jan. 5
Galax residents will have a little longer to pay their personal property taxes this year, thanks to extra-thorough testing of the billing software. At the Nov. 13 meeting, City Manager Keith Barker asked Galax City Council members to move the deadline for personal property payments to 30 days later than the regular Dec. 5 date. “No one will incur penalties for payment past the normal date,” Barker noted.
Berrier files for recount
HILLSVILLE – Carroll County’s School Board election results for the Fancy Gap District are being challenged by candidate Phillip W. Berrier. Berrier has filed for a recount after incumbent Joey D. Haynes won the Nov. 7 election by a three-vote margin, with Berrier placing second in the four-way race. Gina Hall and Patricia Sebens also ran in the district race, but each garnered less than half of Berrier’s 498 votes. Haynes received 501.
Virginia helps its farmer veterans
Veterans seeking to transition from their life in service to a career in agriculture will have some new resources to help them along the way. According to a recent announcement, the Virginia chapter of the Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC), a national organization, launched earlier this year alongside West Virginia and New York chapters, and have already begun developing partnerships and establishing a network for their cause. A notable example of this is their partnership with Homegrown by Heroes.
