Seed Words for Healthy Digital Living in the New Year

|
By Adam Gertsacov
| fosi.org
When I was studying yoga in graduate school, our teacher would ask us before each session to choose a seed word – a concept – to focus on during that particular session. You could choose balance, or strength, or grace, or breathing, or ease, or, well just about anything. During that session that would be the one thing we’d really work on keeping at the top of our minds.

One Book One Chicago is a great Each year, the Chicago Public Library Foundation sponsors a great program called One Book, One Chicago (OBOC). The question that the program asks is “What if all of Chicago read the same book at the same time?”  It started in 2001, and over the years they have continued to add programming supporting discussions around each title.

I Want My Son to Know Judaism but I'm Not Sure I Believe Anymore?

With Passover beginning tomorrow night, I’ve been reflecting of late on my hard relationship with Judaism. On one hand, my identity is very much as a Jew, at least culturally. I had a bar mitzvah. I’ve been to Israel. I can read Hebrew (although my understanding is limited). I went to a Hebrew high school, and even taught there for two years. I know the blessings by heart, or mostly.

Using Parenting skills to end dogfighting in Chicago and beyond. - Chicago Dads Group

For as long as I’ve seen the Midnight Circus, Chicago’s homegrown circus, I think they’ve always had a dog in the act. It’s been their family dog, which makes great sense, seeing how the Midnight Circus is a family affair-. Jeff Jenkins and his wife  Julie headline and ringmaster the show, while their two children perform in it. It makes sense that their dog would also be in it. In fact, if they had a parakeet, I’d expect that bird to somehow make an appearance.

My Days as Toddler Dad are Gone Forever - City Dads Group

|
By Adam Gertsacov

I was waiting in line at Trader Joe’s when I had deja vu and an epiphany. I was by myself, having just dropped my son off at school. The guy in line in front of me was with his 2-year-son. The kid was still learning to talk well and use his words, still learning to walk like an expert — a cutie in a parka, looking around at the world. As kids often are, the boy was both interested and scared of me.

Worst Dad Ever? According to My Son, That Would Be Me

|
By Adam Gertsacov

My son’s room is a perpetual mess. Hey, he’s 7, I don’t blame him. My office is a mess, too. And I’m 7.29 times older than he is! But last week, when I could no longer find the covers on his bed because of the layers of stuff strewn across it, I felt enough was enough. (My office is almost at that point, but not quite.) I resolved that we had to clean it up.

Mom's Love for Him was as Simple as 1-4-3

Editor’s Note: In honor of Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, we are featuring posts about moms and a mom’s love by our City Dads Group contributors. My mom was a junior high school art teacher for more than 25 years. Her specialty was not the art her students created, but the creativity she taught them. Many of her students would get down on themselves and their artwork. It wasn’t going the way they wanted, they couldn’t draw perspective, they couldn’t draw their self-portrait, whatever.

National Poetry Month Lyrical Way to Celebrate Spring with Children

|

I am a big fan of both poetry and children, and now is the time to celebrate them both — April is National Poetry Month! National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture.
