Everything to know about RVing Arches National Park
We are on the road again traveling Nature’s Highways. Today we are RVing to Arches National Park, the last stop in our tour of Utah’s Mighty 5. Arches holds the densest collection in the world with more than 2,000 arches of Entrada Sandstone deposited 235 million years ago. Since 1970, 43 arches have collapsed. Established as a national monument by President Hoover in 1929, it became a national park under President Nixon in 1971.
What to see, what to do, and where to stay while RVing Canyonlands, Utah's largest national park
On the road again traveling Nature’s Highways to Utah’s largest national park covering 527 square miles, half the size of Rhode Island. On the list of most visited parks in 2023, Canyonlands National Park (CANY) ranks at #28, with 800,322 visitors. CANY offers an array of natural features. From the Island in the Sky, one can view a hundred miles of landscape. The Colorado and Green Rivers carved out the “canyons” of Canyonlands, exposing over 300 million years of geologic layers.
High desert RVing in beautiful Capitol Reef National Park, Utah
On the road again traveling Nature’s Highways. Let’s stop on our RVing trip at Wayne Wonderland National Monument. Don’t recognize that name? That is because on August 2, 1937, FDR proclaimed it as Capitol Reef National Monument, with 37,711 acres. In 1958 Ike added another 3,040 acres. Then in 1968, LBJ added an additional 215,056 acres. Finally, Nixon made it a national park, adjusting the 1969 boundary for 243,921 acres.
RV tripping to Bryce Canyon National Park: What to know, what to do, where to stay
We are on the road again traveling Nature’s Highways to Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA). There is nothing quite like Bryce Canyon camping. On February 25, 1928, Bryce Canyon officially became a national park of 35,835 acres. The National Park Service ranks BRCA fifteenth of the most visited parks with 2.34 million visitors in 2022. The park hosts 300,000+ visitors monthly from May through September.

Hiking with the Angels: Everything to know about RVing around Zion National Park
Hop on board Nature’s Highways as we travel through Mukuntuweap National Monument. Never heard of it? You probably know it as Zion National Park. Established in 1919, Zion ranks third of the most-visited national parks, and has some stunning camping areas. This may be your first visit, but others have camped, hunted, and lived there for more than 8,000 years. Let’s take a look as to why Puebloans, Paiute and Ute Indians, Franciscan missionaries, and Mormons saw the canyon as a sanctuary.
The beautiful Grand Canyon National Park: A guide for RVers
This segment of Nature’s Highways needs to address the elephant in the room… the Grand Canyon. In 2022, Grand Canyon National Park came in second as the most visited park in the U.S. (4.7 million), just edging out Zion but way behind Great Smoky Mountains NP. The area’s numbers are impressive. Through the 1.2 million acres, the Colorado River carved the canyon 277 miles long, 18 miles at its widest, and over one mile deep.

Traveling New Mexico's U.S. Highway 64: Brazos Summit
We are driving the Brazos Summit via US-64. Our trip began in Taos, making a few stops of interest: Taos Pueblo, Rio Grande Gorge, and Greater World Earthship Community. We finished in the village of Tres Piedras. It is time to drive to the summit. So, let’s go! Before you pull out, be sure to stop for a bite at the Chili Line Depot. It’s called the “best darn restaurant for miles around” and that is more than a slogan. It’s the truth. Whatever you decide to eat you can bet that it is locally raised.

We have visited New Mexico annually for the past 40 years. During that time we have seen many changes in the towns and cities along the way. However, some places never seem to change. One of those is the road from Taos to Tierra Amarilla, U.S. Highway 64. Before we hit the Brazos Summit, here are a few stops along the way. An in-depth look at traveling by RV at Great Smoky Mountains National Park
An Introduction I love all things nature. I enjoy visiting the National Parks, 23 so far. However, the great American highway offers many unique sites along the way. Like you, we discuss where we want to go and work backward from there. That allows us to research all of those spots in between that fall into the “must-see” column. Therein lies my motivation for this column.

(Note: All numbers are the latest full-year figures from 2022.) Great Smoky Mountains National Park Great Smoky Mountains National Park saw 12.94 million visitors last year.

Your ice maker could be growing mold. Make sure you clean it!
Ah, spring has arrived. We pulled the RV out of storage for this year’s maiden voyage. As I went through the spring checklist, I came across “Check the ice maker.” I pulled it out of the box, opened it up, and found black mold around the inside edges. Whoa. Let’s clean that portable ice maker. Why clean it? Your ice maker can become a breeding ground for bacteria, mildew, and mold. What’s more, this happens regardless of the water filter that you use.

RVers, look out for butt-breathing, hard-biting, snapping turtles
My Pawpaw speared the chicken neck on a sharp stick about two feet long. He squatted down, asked his son if he was ready, and pushed the morsel toward the snapping turtle. The turtle shot his head out to grasp the chicken, exposing a good amount of his neck. That is the moment that my uncle swung the razor-sharp machete down, cleanly severing the turtle’s head. Therein lies the beginning of a good turtle soup, and my early encounter with the harsher side of nature meets human.
These activities will beat the RVing winter blues
Well, it’s winter. A lot of RVers winterize the rig and put it up until spring. Others don’t do that, opting for traveling to a warmer clime or hangin’ tough with the white stuff. So, I asked some of my RVing friends what they do during those cold days to keep from going stir-crazy. Most of them replied with activities that seem, well, normal. However, a few came back with things, if not unique, are perhaps limited amongst us. Things that we all do Most of us engage in activities that seem obvious.
10 gifts for the RVer in your life
Every year you think about what to get your RVer. Here are 10 gifts that your RVer wants, but does not know yet. When they open one of these, they will be wide-eyed and big-smiled, trust me. All of the following are available on Amazon. I give the latest price as of November 2022. Outland outdoor propane gas fire pit I love a campfire, but I hate the smoke. This is the time of day you're most likely to hit a deer
It’s a nice evening. Not much traffic on the road. You are a bit tired after a long drive and looking forward to that next RV park for the night. Suddenly, a deer darts across the road followed by two more. You saw the “deer crossing” sign, so you are alert. You brake and, thankfully, no collision. As an RVer, you most likely have seen your share of critters on the road. Hopefully, you have avoided any unpleasant critter collision(s). However, be aware.

These products are RVers' "must-haves" while RVing
A friend and newbie travel trailer owner asked me what five items he MUST have on his RV travels. Not the usual stuff like sewer hose, water hose, etc., that we all know. He wants those items above and beyond the obvious. I asked a group of Facebook RV friends for suggestions. So, based on this totally unscientific survey, I divided the many responses into two categories.

Fall migration is for the birds... but why?
I heard them before I saw them, of course. Their distinctive honk-honk-honk alerts me that fall is here and winter is not far behind. Some snow geese (Anser caerulescens) are on their way to winter in the Southern U.S. Others fly as far as Central Mexico. Birds are in the midst of the great bird fall migration. When I say birds, I mean some 4.7 billion of them. Why do birds migrate? Simply put, there are two main reasons why birds migrate: food and cold.

Your RV isn't safe in a tornado. How to be prepared in case of a last-minute warning
A year ago around this time, the Weather Emergency Alert alarm sounded on my phone. I opened it to see a message that I never wanted to see: Emergency Alert National Weather Service: TORNADO WARNING in this area until 5:30 PM CST. It all happened in less than two minutes. After that, no sound, no wind, no shaking. We just felt a sense of relief in that we had, in fact, just lived through a tornado. We were staying at an RV park in Custer, South Dakota.
