Back From The Dead by Dan Biddle, Douglas Thompson
Back From The Dead Synopsis “They say cats have nine lives so I’ve been giving them a bit of a run. I’ve died three times on an operating table and had the same number of goes at killing myself. Luckily, the doctors were brilliant at saving my life and I was crap at ending it.” For years living was a fate worse than death for Dan Biddle. In a moment of someone else’s madness, he lost all meaning to his existence along with both his legs, his left eye, his spleen and all hearing in his left ear.
The History of Violent Opposition to Black Political Participation
Lamar “Ditney” Smith knew the dangers of helping Black citizens vote in Mississippi in 1955. He had received death threats, and knew about many Black people who had been lynched in his county. In May, white men had killed another Black activist, the Rev. George W. Lee, for registering voters in Mississippi.
Ohio's “Black Laws”
Ohio had barely entered statehood in 1803 when thousands of Black Americans began arriving there from the South. Many were escaping to this “free” state from enslavers in Virginia and Kentucky, just across the Ohio River. Some people even swam across the mile-wide river, or walked across its ice in winter, believing that freedom and opportunity awaited them on the other side. Abolitionism had many supporters in Ohio. Cincinnati, along the river, had a growing Black community.
Dan Biddle: 200 innocent Black men were arrested that night in Pittsburgh
On the moonless evening of February 2, 1909, as the men and women of the Hill were finishing their dinners and tucking in their children, a hundred white police officers fanned out across the district. Led by what one newspaper described as a “Negro-hating” police captain, they barged into homes, saloons, pool halls, and other places where people congregated, and arrested every Black man who could not immediately provide proof of employment.

Now that Frank Rizzo’s statue is gone and Columbus’ is besieged, let’s ponder another Philadelphia statue that’s been in the news: Octavius Valentine Catto, 19th Century civil rights advocate. Since police killed George Floyd, Catto’s statue at the southwest corner of City Hall has become a focal point for protests. He gazes over marchers — women and men, all races, young and old, ministers and the mayor.

#BestGBTwitterShop | Twitter Blogs
Lots of us are lucky to have amazing independent shops on our local high street and while they’re often hidden gems, many are using Twitter in brilliantly innovative ways to let even more people know about them. In recognition of this, Twitter has joined forces with The Great British High Street (@TheGBHighSt) to launch a new competition category - Best Shop on Twitter.
Fibers in Polished Concrete
With a coarse aggregate grind, fibers disappear, though there may be few fiber ends that are not visible to the naked eye. Question: We are placing an interior floor that is to be colored and polished. We would like to use fibers in the mix to eliminate cracking but the architect is afraid that the fibers will show in the surface after polishing or will be “fuzzy.” Is that something to worry about? Answer: We asked Dan Biddle, vice president of sales at Forta Corp., about this.
