Interview

How is social media changing news?

While a challenge to sift kernels from the flood of facts, nothing is more timely or, potentially more authentic, than sourcing via social.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Text: MS Word Photos: Photoshop-Snaggit-Picasa Design:INDD Accounting: Quick Books Merchant account: Stripe Collaboration: Slack, Dropbox

What's your favorite social network?

WeChat - rich in tea information globally

Why did you become a journalist?

During my years as a government employee in public service I came to appreciate the power of a responsible press.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but as senior class president I worked with reporters on staff and contributed articles on class activities. There were 734 in my class.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Check the facts. Then, check again. Let articles rest before hitting publish. There may only be time for a short break - take it. Then review

When's the best time to pitch you?

Via email so I'm reviewing your pitch when I am ready. Phone calls (unless the news is urgent) only interrupt the flow.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

The ones for stories already published in the magazine. Shows the writer didn't take the time to read the current issue.

What's your favorite drink?

Tea

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading. Every great editor reads broadly for several hours a day.
