BKATIT - No Comply Interview
I’ve seen the crowd surfing, getting up on people’s shoulders, and hanging from speakers and scaffoldings. I’ve seen it all. You’ve got an EP on the way, BKATIT. Talk to me about that. E: BKATIT! It’s music we’ve been trying to get out for a long time. So it’s triple as satisfying to get this out there finally. F: There are quite a few different genres [in it]. What’s the process of writing and releasing an EP like BKATIT? F: We are contracted to release a certain amount of singles, EPs and albums.

Viewpoint: Garth’s Pool
Garth Urquhart hosts a who’s who session at his skateable backyard pool. XAir was on, and there was an influx of skateboarders in Tauranga. Garth, the great host he is, made sure his backyard pool was ready to make the most of the opportunity. The DMs ran wild, and within an hour, a who’s who of the NZ skateboard industry was poolside in semi-rural Tauranga. I only had the camera out for 30 minutes, and I’d got my fill. I even had time for a few chicken scratches before sundown.

Von Griffin, Smith grind. The support that goes into festivals like these is so important, and everyone in attendance: fans, staff, friends, family and the competitors all stepped it up a little bit more to show their appreciation. This was well and truly evident in the Hot Wheels Skate 16 & Under division. These kids are getting so good that many aren’t waiting to age out before heading into the big leagues of the Open Division. The future really looks bright for New Zealand skating.

Pavement Octofest - Photo Gallery
First published in Manual #69, Dec 2022. The main idea behind this event is to skate a spot where you’re not allowed to skate, to be given free rein on the stairs and rail without fear of getting kicked out or having an ignorant member of the public try to give you an ear full. The weather was perfect, the crowd was enthusiastic and trouble-free, and the skating was epic. The feedback from skaters was great.

130K Up The Highway by Tim Hillier
The West Daly region is 350 km South West of Darwin, across the amazing fishing river of Daly. It was Digby & Adelaide’s first trip out to a remote community. This trip had a slight detour of Mataranka, slight being 800kms out of the way, round trip. Our friendly hosts provided us with a pool table, fire pit and sheltered mini ramp and the perfect bush camp. Possibly the best camp spot ever. We hit the hot springs, and then our first flat tyre, then back up the Stuart Highway and towards Naiyu.

Lookback: Bill Bycroft Raw Skateboard HD Footage
Intro and video edits by Dan Bycroft. Original video and comments by Bill Bycroft. Let’s hear it for skateboard filmers. It’s a dirty, thankless, repetitive job that takes persistence and patience. But it’s also essential work, if a trick wasn’t captured on film did it really happen? My brother Bill is a perfectionist with a relentless eye for detail, so of course, he’s a great skate filmer.
