Dan Guidance & Fishy: Abstract Shapes
There are many great things that are part of being a Dan Guidance fan. There is the sheer quality of his music that has led me to declare many times that he is, in my opinion, the greatest living artist making music today. Classic cut follows classic cut in a seemingly never-ending purple patch. I can’t think of another artist who so consistently sets the bar so high and never once fails to meet it. There is the different shades that colour his work.
Dan Guidance: In the Shadows and Another Realm EPs Reviews
Dan Guidance once again demonstrates his prolific work ethic with the release of two EPs, showcasing his differing takes on Drum & Bass. In these days where taking years between releases is not uncommon, this reassures me that creativity is alive and well and is not always chained to making as much money as possible out of each new release. It is also a sign of someone who feels compelled to be creative, always a good sign for any credible artist.
Dan Guidance: Freequencies
Recording an album can be a tricky thing, sometimes taking years to complete. Then there is the matter of promoting the album, which can involve years of touring. Small wonder then that bands can take many years in between these releases. On the other hand, you could be like Dan Guidance and release three of the buggers in three months! Even more impressive is that each album is just so damn good! The work rate on show does not negatively impact the songs one bit.
Dan Guidance: Freedom of Movement
In our recent interview with Drum & Bass wunderkind Dan Guidance, I made the bold claim that he is currently “the greatest artist making music in the world today”. This is the kind of statement that a) sounds hyperbolic and b) causes people to debate you when you meet. It wasn’t intended to cause either of those reactions, but was instead a genuine belief that I have actually held for some time.
Dan Guidance Interview: “I work on music most days and I rarely get writer’s block”
Back in the ’90s, the dance music scene was as fast changing as it was exciting. Genres seemed to come and go and to change with dizzying speed. One of the many new genres that sprang up was Jungle, or Drum & Bass. This new music was lauded as an exciting new direction for dance music and one that, so we were told, made techno seem instantly old fashioned. For whatever reason, probably more than a little techno purism, Drum & Bass never really clicked with me.
