Opinion: Utah is investing in the future of defense Original
Earlier this year, Utah celebrated the groundbreaking of Northrop Grumman’s new Roy Innovation Center in Roy. Gov. Spencer Cox called it a major milestone for our state, and he was right. For decades, Utah has been a cornerstone of America’s defense industrial base. The men and women who design, build and test some of our nation’s most important defense systems live right here in our communities.
Why I'm withdrawing my candidacy for state Senate Original
After serious contemplation, I've decided to withdraw from the state Senate District 24 race, and while most readers won't know who I am or care, I thought I'd try to explain my thought process in the hope that it might help others as they think through tough decisions. Clayton Christensen, the late Harvard business professor, asked the question, "How will you measure your life?" He argued that we should be deliberate in our vocational pursuits and that a focus on money will be unfulfilling.
What the Startup State can learn from the Startup Nation
Editor's Note: Natalie Gochnour, David Eccles School of Business Associate Dean and Deseret News contributor, traveled with a delegation of business and community leaders on a trade mission led by the World Trade Center Utah to Israel and United Arab Emirates. Here is an insider's look at what occurred on the trade mission in the third of a six-part series. Only three countries have successfully landed a spacecraft on the moon - the United States, China and the Soviet Union.
Guest opinion: The 2021 Utah legislative session was a victory for our economy
With the conclusion of this year’s legislative session and my first two months at the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, I invite you to consider with me the session’s economic headlines. First, I’m honored to work with a dedicated team of professionals and public servants. Their enthusiasm to advance Gov. Cox’s economic priorities with pride and determination, and for the benefit of all Utahns, is inspiring.
Dan Hemmert: Medicaid work requirements work. It’s time to bring them back.
Recently, The Salt Lake Tribune published an opinion piece by contributor Paul Gibbs asserting that Medicaid work requirements are a waste of time and money. This well-meaning piece was terribly misguided, given solid evidence that work requirements do indeed help move individuals out of welfare to work and self-reliance. Medicaid was originally conceived to provide health care for those truly in most need — low-income children and pregnant women, the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
Commentary: Utah needs a detailed plan to fight COVID-19
(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Dr. Angela Dunn, Utah State Epidemiologist, speaks at a news conference in the state's Emergency Operations Center on Thursday, March 12, 2020 addressing the current state of COVID-19 in Utah. Representatives from the Utah System of Higher Education, the Utah Board of Education, Utah Jazz, local health authorities and Utah Department of Health were also present.
Commentary: Reject the top-down Obama era Medicaid expansion that is Prop 3
Recently I joined a delegation to The Tribune editorial board to explain our opposition to Proposition 3, full Medicaid Expansion under the “Affordable Care Act” (ACA). Such was our reception that board member George Pyle later published an “apology” for his rather animated response in the meeting. His apology included a charge that we lied. We did not.
Letter: Health insurance taxes
As Congress returns to D.C. at the end of the month, constituents throughout Utah will be eying the progress our representatives can make on hot-button issues like tax reform, infrastructure and health care. Before any major legislation passes, however, Congress will need to go through the process of passing a bill to fund the government.
