Forbidden Worlds Film Festival: October 2023
By Dan Hutton, Co-Deputy Features Editor and Amaan Ali, Opinion Editor On October's Friday 13th, horror fanatics from around the country came down to the Bristol aquarium to enjoy 6 carefully selected retro horror movie classics across two days. The Forbidden World Festival, which had its first screenings last year, was created by a group of ‘Bristol-based cinephiles’ who are ‘dedicated to their mutual love of classic and obscure genre films’.
Why Can’t Theatres Be More Like Public Parks?
The following is an edited excerpt from Towards a Civic Theater by Dan Hutton, published by Salamander Street and available online and in bookstores. Summer 2020. Two contrasting spaces. One full of life. Another populated only by ghosts. The first, packed with people and activity: exercise classes; birthday barbecues; parent-child science lessons. The second, full only with the promise of what might have been: laughter; tears; words; art. The former is a park. The latter a theatre.
Local Favourite – Paul - The Beast

By Madeleine Gray & Dan Hutton on December 30, 2016 in People Photo: Johnny Diaz Nicolaidis Where are you originally from? I’m a Larrakia woman. I’m from, and my people are from, the Darwin region. I didn’t grow up on my country, though. I grew up in Kakadu National Park. Where are you living these days? I live in Kingsford. I’ve been living there for a good two years. What do you love about the Eastern Suburbs? I like being close to the beach.
Does Bondi Have A Macquarie Connection?
News Satire People Food Other By Dan Hutton on January 19, 2011 in Other On January 1, 1810 Lachlan Macquarie was sworn in as the fifth Governor of the colony of New South Wales. The 200th anniversary last year included a statewide celebration program to acknowledge his significant contribution to NSW and his achievements, and those of his wife Elizabeth, during his 12-year tenure. Waverley may have a Macquarie connection, although it is a tenuous one.
Rebekah Elmaloglou - Rekindling The Passion
By Dan Hutton on September 30, 2014 in People Where are you originally from? I’m originally from the Jungo. Bondi Junction? Yep. Years ago they changed it to Queens Park, but no one would believe you. You’d say, “I’m from Queens Park” and people would go, “Where?” And you’d go, “Well it’s actually sort of part of Bondi Junction” and they’re like, “So you’re from the Jungo?” Finally, years later, they gave it its own suburb and postcode. Where is the name ‘Elmaloglou’ from? It’s Greek Turk.
Local Bloke... John Dicks from Bondi Beach
By Dan Hutton on April 24, 2019 in People Not sweating the small stuff, by James Hutton. Bondi’s John Dicks, Headmaster of Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School, recently escaped the Bondi bubble and made his way down the coast to lovely La Perouse. He shares his local favourites with The Beast… How long have you lived here? After years living at Bondi Beach, we decided to make the move out of what my kids refer to as the ‘Bondi bubble’. About ten months ago we packed up and moved to La Perouse.

Alicia Gonzalez moved to Bondi from Spain two years ago, when she took up a job as a designer with Blakes of Sydney in Charing Cross. She shares her local favourites with The Beast… How long have you lived here? Two years, and it feels like home. I am from Spain, where I grew up and studied, but I lived in the UK for a couple of years before coming to Sydney. Why do you live here? I am a beach lover.

By Nat Shepherd on March 5, 2019 in Other Big Brother is watching you, by George Orwell Look around: who is watching you right now? CCTV, a drone, malware in your phone, a spy camera in the light bulb? George Orwell’s powerful warning against totalitarianism, 1984, has been a best seller since Trump weaseled his way into power, but what amazes me about that book is how accurately Orwell predicted our current state of surveillance.
Local Bloke - David Arbib from North Bondi
By Dan Hutton on February 21, 2019 in People Barefoot and happy, by James Hutton David Arbib has been living in North Bondi for just about as long as he can remember. When he’s not hanging out with his family, he’s running his successful project management and building services business, Sun Projects. Monthly Mailbag - March 2019
By The People of the Eastern Suburbs on February 19, 2019 in Other BUS BEDLAM Dear editors – I read Anthony Parrelli’s letter in the February edition (Thrown Under the Bus, Letters, The Beast, February 2019) with interest. I too have contacted the local member, State Transit, etc. regarding the scrapping of the 361 bus service, all to no avail – no response apart from the generic email to say my email had been received.

The Unreliable Guide to... Consumerism
By Nat Shepherd on February 7, 2019 in Other There’s nowhere to hide, by Leigh Salesman The Unreliable Guide is fed up with advertising, the proselytising arm of the latest and most insidious religion of them all: consumerism. Don’t believe it’s a religion? Consider Xmas.com and EasterTM. These formally religious occasions are now celebrations of consumption (no doubt to the amusement of Pagans whose Yule and Oestra festivals were similarly hijacked by early Christians).
On Being a Mummy Taxi
By Con Gestion on February 6, 2019 in Other Only another 15 kilometres to go, by Miles Long Lately I’ve been ferrying a five year-old grandchild to preschool, joining the ‘Mummy Taxi’ fleet that clogs our roads and schools in the mornings and afternoons. Like many, I have railed against this practice, which can result in neurotic, overweight, gormless children, fraught mothers and unnecessary traffic congestion.
Keeping the Christmas Spirit Alive
By Dan Hutton on January 28, 2019 in News The man himself, by Lucas Goldman Christmas, as they say, is all about the spirit of giving, and the Eastern Suburbs community certainly embraced that sentiment in late December when they came together to donate gifts to Mal Ward’s Christmas Presents for Sick Kids event.

The Beaches and Beauty of Milos Island
By The Bondi Travel Bug on January 15, 2019 in Other Horrible looking place, by the Bondi Travel Bug Departing Athens from the port of Pirius on a 7am ferry got us to the island of Milos at around midday. We were greeted by a cloudless sky and a warm, gentle breeze. There were only a few taxis around so we had to scramble into the first available. From the port it was only a 10-minute drive along some hilly dirt roads until we reached our accommodation, Villa Mina.
Corruption of Mates
By Con Gestion on January 9, 2019 in Other The peanut gallery, by Diana Stee Sorry readers, but I need to get serious as I am hurting. My be- loved adopted country, Australia, is ailing. A love of democracy is close to my Greek heart, which is currently pained. All I see in Australia is its corruption by mates – the nepotism of the entitled put- ting their mates and their children and friends into positions of power with no regard for merit, wisdom, integrity or even, god forbid, intelligence.

Great Scott! Bronte Surfers Hail Their New King
By Dan Hutton on December 28, 2018 in News A new king is crowned, by Bill Morris (@billmorris) The Bronte Boardriders 2018 season wrapped up on the first weekend of December in fun 2-3 foot conditions, with victory to Mitchell Scott in both the open championship (Carter Cup) and the man-on-man Matt Clements Cup, reaffirming somewhat of a changing of the guard down at the Eastern Suburbs’ most challenging surf beach.

The Greatest Eyesore of the East? By Con Gestion on December 6, 2018 in Other Burn it down and start again, by Mon Strosity Is the Maroubra Seals (Sports and Community Club) the greatest eyesore in the Eastern Beaches? Our Aboriginal Past and Present
Have you ever wondered who lived where you are now – who walked the streets, played in the park or combed the beach? What ghosts and spirits inhabit the place around us? I am regularly in awe of what my ancestors have given me, as I live happily here on Sydney’s glorious Eastern Beaches. I can go back quite a few generations in the stories passed down from my grandparents about their grand- parents – warts and all, heroes and villains, ghosts in cupboards. I am lucky to have this knowledge.

THE BEST BLOKE WE HAVE EVER KNOWN It was sad to hear that Bronte’s most recognisable icon, John ‘Meggs’ Maguire, passed away suddenly on September 25, 2018. Every person in Bronte both past and present knows our dad, because he would go right out of his way to welcome people to his beach and make them feel at home. John Maguire touched so many lives with his sincerity, his dry humour, his dedication, his willingness to help and his ‘get out there and really have a dig’ attitude.

A Very Long Journey on a Very Long Train
Our very first sighting of the Indian Pacific train, with its iconic silver bullet-like carriages and famous eagle emblem, was at Perth train station. It was so long that we couldn’t see its beginning or end. The train is an unbelievable 774 metres in length, just less than two full laps of an Olympic running track. It is made up of 28 passenger carriages, along with engine rooms and separate carriages for restaurants, bars, lounges and the charismatic crew.
“Men in the Cities” by Chris Goode
It feels odd to say of an oft-described “experimental” theatre-maker, but Men In The Cities is perhaps the most novelistic and literary piece of theatre I’ve seen this year. In the same vein as Mark Haddon’s A Spot of Bother or Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections, Goode’s monologue follows the lives of a number of people – specifically men in this case – over the course of the same period of time. We catch glimpses of lives, snatches of personality.
The Unreliable Guide to... De-cluttering Your Life
The Unreliable Guide moved house last month and had to sort out ten years worth of accumulated stuff. It turns out I was hoarding a lot of crap. Are you? Apparently about 80 per cent of us find it painful to get rid of stuff, even if it’s not used, wanted or liked. We may not be among the five per cent of clinical hoarders you see on television – like Mrs Bobolas in Bondi, who has had her junk cleared away by Council 15 times at a cost of $350,000 – but it can be hard to get rid of clutter.
Robot Robbers Are All Around
My dear sister, Consuela, only the other day made a remarkable statement. She said: “Robot robbers are all around us.” Naturally I was thrown into a mild state of panic by this rolling alliteration, so I immediately asked her what she meant. Connie explained that she was talking of the poker machines that proliferate like the plague in every pub and club in our district, except, fortunately, for our surf life saving clubs.
