The Making of Blue Velvet Was Even Weirder Than You Think
On August 19, 1985, a film crew assembled in the backyard of a Wilmington home. It was the early days of the city’s film industry, and the sight of trailers and trucks was still a novelty in the Forest Hills neighborhood. You could ask a stranger to use their house for a shoot, and they would say “yes” because they didn’t yet understand what a pain in the neck it would be. The weather was beautiful for the first day of shooting, sunny and unseasonably mild.

The Cowbird - Remembering Dad on Father's Day
As we unfolded our lawn chairs within the maple’s shade we startled a wren from the arborvitae close by. Without her sudden departure, her miniature nest would never have been brought to our attention. In what might be de-scribed as a remarkable role reversal, I found myself teaching the old man with me the little I knew about the large egg we spotted mixed with those of the momma wren.
My Old Friend Might Have Been An Astronaut
Growing Older and Other Blessings Growing Older and Other Blessings The 1957 NBC jointure allowed me to meet a whole new group of students and thus lifelong friends. One of these was Mary Anne Whited, a bright, fun, athletic girl who was destined to help make the world a better place. Mary Anne now lives in a cottage at Homewood in Martinsburg where she still rides her bicycle and keeps busy with many projects. "I am not retired," she says.
Po's Peek at the Past: The Seeds of Language
If my blessings in life were to be tabulated, I honestly feel I’ve had a lot more bestowed upon me other than just my fair share. At the top of my list of blessings would sit the lady with whom I often joke that I’m forever grateful that she asked me to marry her. And that lady would obviously be my wife, Terri. A sundry supply of reasons exist for my inserting her name into that top spot, but her child-rearing techniques surely are noteworthy enough to at least mention.
10,000 Maniacs: MTV Unplugged
The first sound on 10,000 Maniacs’ MTV Unplugged is an announcer introducing the band and its lead singer to the assembled audience: “Well, it’s time to start—let’s say hi to Natalie and 10,000 Maniacs.” When the MTV Unplugged producer Alex Coletti said those words in April 1993, that and meant something very different than it would in the autumn of 1993, when the album was released.

Have you ever thought that you and your family might be driven out of your community? Or worse, being tarred and feathered, then forced out of town, as was done in days gone by? The thought of that happening actually occurred to me in regard to a couple of incidents that took place about 28 years ago. The Lingernots
Tears came to my eyes as I did my daily take on the obituaries. The name, Belva Lee (Baker) Slagenweit, could only belong to my old school friend. Belva and her twin sister, Betty, helped me to put on my boots in first grade. We played sax together, sang in the chorus, worked on school projects and were part of the “Lingernots”. In about the seventh grade, seven of us “giggle of girls” formed a group called the Lingernots. I think the name came from a Nancy Drew mystery.

Po's Peek at the Past: Beaver Cleaver And The Lone Hobo
Students today might chuckle when they see a photo of kids’ school attire from back in the day. For baby boomers attending class in the late 60’s, though, those photos remind us of a time when students couldn’t just dress as they pleased. Conformity to the rules, such as following the student dress code, was practiced by students, administrators and parents alike.

Po's Peek at the Past: Some Stories Are Best Left Untold...
And this might be one of them A few months ago, I was relating an old teaching story to my daughter Kelly and her husband. At the conclusion of the tale, there was a moment of dead silence, where neither listener reacted much at all. Of course, I thought the narrative was hilarious and I felt a tad awkward when neither my daughter nor her husband shared my enthusiasm regarding the tale.

The end of “His Dark Materials,” Philip Pullman’s blockbuster children’s fantasy trilogy, carried a comforting message: Growing up may be dangerous and frightening, but it’s rewarding, as the protean innocence of youth gives way to the wisdom and pleasure of adulthood. So it was jarring to learn, in Pullman’s follow-up trilogy, “The Book of Dust,” that Lyra, his intrepid heroine, hadn’t found adulthood rewarding at all.
